So whadda ya think, is Mick gone mad or is it a master stroke ?

Personally I would have picked either shay Given or Mark Kinsella..

I can see no reason why he isn't good enough to be captain but I find it strange that he wasn't even in the starting lineup at the WC and is now the captain. Strange...

Strange, laughable; McCarthy's clearly been indulging on this year's fresh batch of magic mushrooms.

Well I have a couple of points on this actually.

First of all, it's hardly surprising that Mc Carthy has picked a captain with a "calming influence" now is it??

Secondly, I personally would have had Holland by a longshot and for the future Colin Healy.

Finally, it doesn't count for much in this day and age, but I know Kenny's dad through playing scorer as a nipper and regularly met with Kenny himself in the past and I can safely say that Kenny is a sound chap, and most definitely is a cool head. His dead will be absolutely delighted for him as he should be too.

Overall, it's not a bad appointment at all!

    There's my 2 cents ;)

Think he's gonna make a good captain and apparantly he didnt play a big part in the world cup as he was injured!
My biggest concern regaring McCarthy this weekend is regarding Duff
He needs to be out on the wing with Clinton Morrison up front with Keane (Robbie):D IMHO

Oh well if 'kenny' is a 'sound chap' and a 'cool head' then it doesn't matter about his abilities or experience, right???

While its nice to see an irish man got the job over Gary Breen and Matt Holland,Kenny is a good solid player who's calm and intelligent and will amke a good captain. He's 31 so its not like he will be captain for long,it has to be Shay given after that, well until Roy gets back anyway :)

    Great to see.
    A good solid player.
    Widely respected.
    He deserves it.

I would be happy enough with that. The reason he did not figure much in the World Cup was because he was getting over a long term injury and may not have been up to match fitness or sharpness yet. He has been captain before and I always like a centre defender as the captain, they see everything that haapens on the pitch as it is all going on in front of them. Net choice would be Shay Given or Mat Holland.

Matt Holland has captained Ipswich already. On this basis, I would have given it to Holland.

Yes i think it`s a good choice. He may be a mediocre player but in the absence of experianced players in the Ireland squad he should have a positive influence on the young players.

    Hes a great choice.

Kennys got lots of experience, hes captained his (old) club, captained his country before and most importantly is well respected by the players.

And yes, as was mentioned he was injured for the world cup. Jesus pornapster, dont you read ANY non utd news?:P

His living will be delighted for him too! :) (sorry couldn't resist)

But yeah, Cunningham is a decent choice for captain. I would have prefered Breen tho!

He was my tip all along. Lets hope it's not too long before John O'Shea is partnering him in defence. Breen is not as good as everyone said he was during the WC

    ROFLMAO

That's class mate. I didn't realise that typo. Great retort and stuff ;)

Pity he marked his first game as captain with the most inept display seen from an Ireland player in years, quite possibly the worst player on the pitch. But there was so many to choose from...
