lets make a quick comparison shall we

    pokemon vs thundercats
    digimon vs MASK
    anything vs transformers
    else that's
    on

they're being filled with all this " I love everything" crap, i mean
kids should be dreaming about driving some sort of rocket tank to kill their teacher or having a thundercats sword to chop their heads off, or anything along those lines, certainly not talking to their pets and telling their friends they love them, thats not what kids should be.

uylsees 31, need i go on? yu gi oh? what the hell is that supposed to be? an effort to stop cardcaptor sakura hentai flooding the internet by introducing a similar format with a man? die i say die.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 999 ✭✭✭DrunkLeprachaun

Card Captor Sakura is actualy pretty damn good in it's true form, it's just nelva ****ed in the ass with their subbing of it. In the japanese version, almost every character is attracted to someone of the same gender, both of sakura's teachers are in love with someone from her class(bear in mind these are 10 year olds), Sakura's father was sakura's mother's teacher, and sakura's mother's (female) cousin was in love with her, and that's why she resents him. Tomoyo/Madison is completely infatuated with sakura, even though they're the same gender and they're, again cousins. Also, Meilin is Li's cousin as well as fiance. CLAMP are a ****ed up organisation. But it is a good anime/manga.

    Oh come on people!!!

How can you forget BATTLE OF THE PLANETS!!!!

Also anyone remember the nursery rhyme.. Three Blind Mice?

    "....farmers wife
who cut off their tails with a carving knife
did you ever see such fun in your life
    as three blind mice."

I mean, we were taught that mutilating disabled animals was FUN!

actually, that may explain a few things...

I quite agree with Raziel. There is far too little mindless baddy bashing going on. As far as I've noticed every new children's cartoon is either some kind of animated soap set in "real life" where NOBODY has superpowers or a secret identity (I blame Hey Arnold for these) or a tie-in to a new collecting game (I don't even know if Card-captors cards are availible in this country).

That said I did watch Jackie Chan's cartoon series today with my little brother. It's exactly what there should be in the afternoons.

Ah the Ninja tutles-the Pokemon of my generation.I watched that show religiously when i was a kid:D Twas a classic.Bebop and Rocksteady were like monsterised versions of Beavis and Butthead(they were dim but cool guys:D )I also remember Shredder and that brain that lived in the robots body(kang or krang wasnt it?)Todays Japenese crap aint a patch on it(though the turtles were japanese made but diffo story).Aye the turtles ruled. As for the singalong types of shows i loved Playbus(?) on BBC(especially the Y Bird stop). Also ALF and the Den in general. But if you watch a few eps of Pokemon they connect to the next like a normal tv series and b4 you know it you watch it every day to find out where they are gone to next.
Dont worry Im attending Pokemonoholics Anonomyous and Ive quit viewing.;)

Read through the list of cartoons in the thread about peoples favourite cartoons. They're both mentioned there.

About the only modern cartoons I'd give my vote to is X-Men (the later series) and Batman Animated (which friggin' kicked ass). Iron Man is cool too, but a little too goody-two-shoes.
    As for the one's I grew up on;
    Ulysses 31
    Captain Planet
    Ultra Force (seriously under-rated cartoon)
    Thundercats
    HE-MAN
    Defenders of the Earth
    Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors
    Transformers
Maxi's World (sad, I know, but Maxi was my first cartoon crush)
    Gummi-Bears
    Duck Tales
    etc etc

    erm..
    right lads

    anyway :)

does anyone remember the FIRST spiderman cartoon? the VERY VERY first one? was on YEARS and years and years ago.. I loved that, the intro was pure class :)

he was always foiling bank robberies and musuem heists, none of this robotic spiders and stuff that's in the middle version.

does anyone know if they can be bought on vid or dvd?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 147 ✭✭Hobnail Monkey

Is this the one 'Spiderman and his amazing friends' with Iceman and Firestar in it???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 128 ✭✭Grand_Izer

I think Mord is refering to the version from the late 60s. It had a cheesy but memorable intro tune sung in the style of commericals from that time...

    "Spiderman. Spiderman.
    Does whatever a spider can.
    Spins a web, any size.
    Catches thieves- just like flies.
Look out! Here comes the Spiderman!
    Is he strong? Listen, bud.
    He's got radioactive blood.
Can he swing, from a thread?
    Take a look overhead.
Hey, there! There goes the Spiderman!
In the chill of night, at the scene of a crime.
Like a streak of light, he arrives just in time!
    Spiderman. Spiderman.
    Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman.

    Wealth and fame? He's ignored.
    Action is his reward.
To him, life is a great big bang-up.
    Wherever there's a hang-up,
    you'll find the Spidermannnnnnnnnnn"

    :D

    I remember that theme tune.
It used to always be stuck in my head. In fact I was disappointed when it wasnt used for the film. :)

yes yes yes! that's the one :) heh, class.

yeah i remember the original spider man cartoon it was great at the time.
Unfortunately the Animation was of very poor quality even by the standards of the day and it has Aged very badly.

Bagpus on the otherhand is Timeless.

But who remembers bosco, now that was the best sort of peace and love kiddies program ever,

And there was captain pugwash but i was to old for that, oh well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,046 ✭✭✭Dustaz

Umm captain pugwash was made in the early 70's wasnt it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

One of the things that grates me nowadays is the lenght of time kids programmes are on for now. FFS in the 70's we were lucky to see on Wanderley Wagon once a week! And when Dempsey's Den went to Network 2, we were amazed when it ran for 3 hours (not including Bosco!) Now the Den goes on for 13 hours a day!!

Kids programmes were unheard of in the mornings during the week, safe for Play School at 11am.

When I was a young 'un, schools programmes and the test card was best thing on telly.... which might explain a few things.....

(Yes, and Captain Pugwash has been remade recently, Dustaz)

I blame the crapness of modern cartoons on computers. Before the mid-90's everyone painted them nicely on cel and filmed them, and they had to make damn sure the plot/animation was good to justify the huuugge expense. Now every retard with a pentium and a tablet can just draw some crappy outline and color it badly in crappy washed-out pastel colors in photoshop or whatever. Also, what the fcuk is the deal with collecting monsters?!?!?! every damn show nowadays is copying the pathetic pokemon thing.
    My fave cartoons:
    Dungeons and Dragons
    Jayce and the wheeled warriors
    he man
    pacman
    cities of gold etc.

anyone know if they have stuff like this on DVD nowadays?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

All I know for sure is that you can get Transformers on DVD.
I'd love to be able to get M.A.S.K. and He-Man though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 852 ✭✭✭m1ke

ah the amount of hours i'd sit infront of the tv watching cartoons was sickening. The mid-late eighties even with the T.C.C channel The Childrens Channel, it's well closed down now, i'd watch that for hours. And I musta seen every show mentioned here.

If anyone wants to get some of these old episodes I suggest taking a look at www.episode-heaven.com . There are a few good sites mentioned with old classic cartoons for download.

That's just nostalgia talking mate. I'm sure, like we do, that the kids of today who grow up on Pokemon will shudder at the kind of stuff kids of 10 years from now are watching. It doesn't mean that any era was better than the others. It's just a matter of how we felt at that point in our lives and we are merely holding onto that feeling thru our fav cartoons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,798 ✭✭✭Funky

some new cartoons are deadly imo, but none are as good as Battletech

Ahh, nostalgia. It's not what it used to be. Back in my day we reminisced much better than you whippersnappers. ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 848 ✭✭✭mirv

Battletech and Earthworm Jim are the ones I miss the most.

The crappy 3D scenes we'd wait for half the episode of Battletech made it worth it, ahh the green polygons.

Earthworm Jim had one of the most funky intros ever made, plus it had snot :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭Slutmonkey57b

    Poekmon=cr@p
    digimon=cr@p
    MASK=cr@p
Thundercats=The world jsut imploded due to the unrelenting CR@P
Transformers=What do you want to buy today?

Sorry, Batman and Starship Troopers kick the fu.ck out of anything from the 80's and early 90's.

Really. Turtles?? Have you watched repeats of that? I'd rather cut my own eyes out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,489 ✭✭✭Clintons Cat

Animaniacs and freakazoid seem curiously forgoten in this thread.

PS for every show of the quality of flintstones or wacky races there were 100 shows of forgetable dross like wait till your father gets home, captain caveman, scrappy doo, yogis treasure hunt, all new adventures of popeye...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

Have to say I hated Freakazoid.
It was just too annoying for my liking.

Actually I forgot all about Popeye. The old ones that is.

Batman the cartoon? That was crap.
How you can say M.A.S.K. is crap is a mystery to me.
