ICQ gives a good few (15/20 I think) free texts a day (not to 085 though) and the other person can reply to ICQ
Vodafone.ie gives you 30 free texts a month
I'm sure there were more but i cant remember them now :)

IOL give you some free (it used be 40, don't know about now). On their webpage - click SMS

You'll have to register for an email address but that's no hassle.

Your best bet for Free SMS is first to use up your limit with your own operator. These text messages come with "own number sending" which is the best.
Meteor very recently added this service via www.mymeteor.ie

    Otherwise there is
    www.boltblue.com
    www.iol.ie / www.oceanfree.net
    www.icq.com
    and loads of others
