Bush snubs UN Earth Summit

Dubya will be on holidays in Crawford, Colin Powell will go in his place.

Conservatives in America have congratulated him on his decision as they felt his daddy had conceded too much in Rio.

I was wondering what thoughts people have on the effect this decision will have on the summit.

Personally, I believe the candid decision was made to have Powell in there as Bush is far from the ideal negotiator. Good decision for America, bad for the rest of the world.

Bush did announce that his administration would operate via 'delegation'.

After Colin Powell was rather publicly and unsuccessfully sent to the Middle East to broker some kind of peace Mr Powell had publicly lost face, not that that is particularly relevant, however it is good that the USA is at least participating in the Earth summit as opposed to boycotting it.

Hopefully Mr Powell will be given some latitude to work within the UN summit where he was not given the same latitude to work within the Middle East situation.
