I'm only back from Norway last month and it is yet another country that puts us to shame with regard to telecommunications. I was at the northern tip, where the "post" (plasterboard, wood, clothes, food) arrives by boat every four days to islands with one or two houses and sure 'nuff there was ISDN available to each and every one of the houses.

Ah Jaysus! Now this country of ours is just taking the f**king pi$$. When in the name of all that's holy are we ever going to get our $hit together.

A lot of places around the country can't even get ISDN and here we have a country that is providing ISDN to a couple of homes on a fecking island? And we can't even do it in some built-up areas on the mainland? Sweet Jesus, it's enough to make you want to step out in front of a bus at this stage! :(

There is a limited distance between the exchange the end of the line for ISDN isn't there ? similar to ADSL in that respect

    AFAIR

    1 mile = 5000 Feet.

    Normal Line (analogue) 5 miles
    ISDN 4 miles
    ADSL 2 - 2.5miles
    IDSL 5 miles

Don't worry, we won't be getting that IDSL Schtuff here, that would be too sensible a solution for the E-Tub ©® of Europe

Oh, and Aidan. That's not the first time you've been following up a post with inane drivel. Give it a rest already. Ta.

But it's not inane drivel. It is a bloody ridiculous situation to be in and I was just pointing it out. And don't go and tell me that I'm preaching to the converted either. There are a lot of new members coming on here all the time who may not know how bad things really are and I feel we need to keep repeating them until people start to listen, whether they be new forumers, politicians, the public, whoever, because the message of how crap this country is regarding internet access is still not getting through.

The past few days I've had posts deleted, been insulted by other forumers and now I feel that I've been insulted by a member of the Ireland Offline committee itself. I've been a member of the group since almost the beginning and I've done as much as possible over the past year to try and spread the word about Ireland Offline and help out the cause in any way I could. But I'm starting to get a bit disenchanted now and the events of the past few days have started to get to me. I'm starting to think that maybe it's time I gave up on Ireland Offline and this forum for a while. I've been accused of being over-the-top and overly dramatic at times with some of my comments but that is purely because this is something I feel very passionately about, too passionately for some, I guess.

I'm think I'm going to take a breather from here for a while. I'll drop in from time to time and have a look at the threads but I won't comment because everytime I do now it seems my posts are either deleted or replied to by people insulting me.

I'm sorry, that's all I can say about this for the time being because my feelings on this are still a bit confused. :(

Norway is the richest country per person in Europe (world as well I think) So they should have better stuff than us :)

Aidan, grow a thicker skin would ye? You too could have "IrelandOffline Committee" under your name instead of "Insane Poster" if you stepped up and asked to help. All I'm asking is that you consider whether your post is contributing to the debate or just mouthing off before posting.

I personally agree with Aidan's sentiments and he states really how I feel most of the time about the lack of progress in the E-Tub (LOL, very good). Currently, living in central Dublin, I cannot avail of
    1. Cable internet (Various excuses given including bankrupt company, public awareness/need low)
    2. DSL, I dont think I have to say anything regarding this and
3.(least important for me but it might reduce costs), flatrate dial-up, a whole host of excuses.

Who is at fault? €ircon to a large degree, the government to a lesser degree, ODTR also. I mean all anyone need do is to look at that report from the ECTA (http://www.ectaportal.com/regulatory/dsl_scorecard_april02.xls) regarding DSL and you can see where we stand. Its pathetic.
Am I to be punished for living in this country because I had the misfortune of being born here and because the perception of Irish backwardness is seemingly a reality as well.?
Will anything change before the end of this year?, probably not, next year?........

IOFFL have done a great job with the resources they have but against the likes of €ircon and various government institutions there is only so much you can do. It will get better here, how long this will take is the question, a long time I would bet.

According to this ECTA report, there are 52,000 cable internet broadband connections in Ireland. The comment to this figure say: "NTL had 45000 BB Internet subscribers by July 26, 2001 - Chorus has started the launch of its digital services".

Have I missed something? I thought NTL cable internet was available in the Tallaght, Dublin area only...

I know I certainly dont have it. The few times that I actually enquired with NTL they gave me the "concentrating efforts on digital television service, cable only available in Tallaght, now piss off and leave us alone, if you want decent internet connection go to England or America or any other country" line. Ok I added that last bit.

The phrase pissing against the wind comes to mind. I mean when you have a government department who is equally concerned with trout along with the gas to cook your fish fingers your optimism tends to subside and leave the harsh truth that this is truly Ireland. What that means I understand now more than ever.
