Just had a Chorus rep in to where I work (net cafe in Kilkenny) trying to flog us Cablenet Broadband, dam I enjoy asking questions I know they can't answer :)

Anyway, I asked him 3 times was there any kind of limit on transfers like Eircom has and he plain faced lied to me 3 times!

T&C on the back of the leaflet clearly state:
"Chorus reserve the right to charge for excessive downloads: download limit is set to 10GB per month, there is a charge of 3c per MB thereafter"

    This bloody well annoys me,

Also he's going around trying to flog this to net cafe's when it also states in the T&C's that:
"The service is only supported when one modem operates with one PC"

Yeah hang on while we rent 15 modem off them.

Though I imagine, if they have any sense they allow the use of a server.

Overall 10GB a month is a big improvment over Eircom's 3GB but still its not much.
Also for price wise it would be better in the end to get 2 lines, allowing 666MB per day for the whole cafe.

Though to be honest I don't know how that would fair as with faster speeds people will download more.

If he knew you were a cybercafe, and was still trying to flog it to you, I think it's safe to assume they won't be enforcing the "no more than 1 PC" rule. :o

Yeah I was thinking that, either that or he was expecting us to fork out **** loads of money.
Currently we got a 128K leased line from the f*cked telco Worldcom, think it comes to about 400/450 a month, thouhg I could be wrong.

But I'm 110% sure there ius no limit on it :D

I wouldn't mind this sort of service being offered in my area. It won't suit absolutely everyone, but it seems to be a vast improvement over what was previously there.

I should imagine for a business deal they would be no limits but you have to check it out, I have been speaking with the guy who is in charge of the Chorus Broadband rollout, they are very business friendily and very ethusastic about their latest plans succeeding.

I know that the 10gig cap is only imposed on the residential service, whenever habitual abuse of the system is involved, Chorus try to maintain a very low contiention (spelling), but that gets all fecked up when someone is download divx's 24/7.

I can tell you that he/we did some speeds tests on the the powernet services which reported a 338kilobit per second download speed, which ain't all that bad for €50 a month.

Give them a call, you might save yourself a bucket load of money.

They probably mean that if you ring for support and start asking them questions about NAT/router related problems then they won't wanna know.
Not supported means, yeah do if you want but don't come crying if it doesn't work.
If its Caped then I'm sure they'l probably work out a deal with you that still works out less than 400 Euros a month. Probably 2 modems like you say.
Also the increased speed should get you more customers.

10gig isnt all that bad and im sure ppl could live with such a cap although no cap would be ideal in an ideal world ::rolleyes at eircom::

places such as belgiums main telcos operate on a 10gig dl limit

If I had a cafe in Kilkenny and had been approached by Chorus I would do a deal like

    Chorus installs uncapped cable modem

They get the right to put up a free ad for their service inside....pointing out where all the speed comes from.

Good advertising placement in my opinion.

You almost had me reaching for the phone there (if I wasn't using the line for the internet). 300Kb/s for €50 a month!
But then I had a quick gecko at their website. It says €101 per month and that after €317 installation, far too expensive for me.
Where did you get €50/month from?

I think the €101 is for the business Powernet (the wirelesss service in Limerick). The home version of this was withdrawn some months ago.

did u really speak with the sales rep, or did u have yer head so far up yer butt you couldnt hear him? i imagine u r the tech geek, and not the decision maker so it matters not.

sorry for the rude reply, but so much disinformation is never good.

    Kilkenny = cablenet (chorus product)
    starts at 50/month

    Limerick = powernet (chorus product)
    starts at 100/month

any cafe worth anything in limerick city has powernet installed, even ones with only half a dozen pc's - if you are paying errorcon for 128k leased line for 15 pc's and dont see the value in a service from chorus that is faster and costs less than i really wonder why you are involved in a business at all.

i am not sure if cablenet in kilkenny has a similar "25 USER" option like powernet in limerick, but if it does, it is cheaper than 128k leased line and allows for 25 pc's to be connected legally

PS the cap you speak of never has been inforced, and that is why the slaesman said it to you. doesnt mean they wont enforce it someday in the furture, but ive enjoyed a year without it.

I never actually said the service was CRAP or bad or to expensive or anything like that, its actually VERY good value for money and from the start I've been very interested.

As for getting it, I phoned my boss that evening about the service.
I'll be doing my very best to get the service installed in the cafe as soon as it can be done.

As for being capped, yes I talked to Chorus and they have explained a few things and they've been very helpfull.

Phoned them today and am waiting on them to ring me back.

To be honest, I guess I spoke to soon about them and started off with a bad tone, that'll teach me not to do that in future.
