I have a question about inevitability. It can be answered by the wise man/woman. What will be the cause of this earth's collapse? How will it happen, why will it happen, when will it happen, what will happen?

Good luck to all of you and I will post my opinion once a sufficient number of replies are posted.

Its in our nature to destroy ourselves, is it?

why will it happen: Because mankind refused to look beyound primal instincts(greed is over compensation of these)

when will it happen: Before independant colonies off world are created, otherwise it might never happen.

what will happen: 56 years and counting since we have had the ability to destroy ourselves in entirity, I.C.B.Ms carry up to 13 50megatonne warheads each, at the height of the cold war it was estimated the earth could be carpet bombed 2.5 times over.this even before we consider fallout.2nd law of thermo-dynamics states that within a closed system(earth) entropy(dis-order) will increase. add the 2 together and things seem inevitable unless the system is expanded.

what exactly do you mean by "this earth's collapse"?

the planet itself? or the human race?

and if the human race.. do you mean our current civilisation? or all future generations *however they may have evolved*

You're referring to mankind, not the earth. There is no known weapon in mankind's possession which is capable of destroying the earth. In theory, a fusion bomb detonated at the planet's core would do it, but we dont have the tech to put one there.

The earth isnt a closed system. If it was, we wouldnt be getting heat from the sun now would we

A scientist in a military bunker somewhere will, in a random every-day test splitting particles, accidently create an unimaginably small blackhole. It will expand, eat up the earth, eventually the sun, and finally glide towards the larger blackhole in the middle of the galaxy. This will happen in 8 years.

I've always imagined a 'nuclear winter' scenario caused by an asteroid or nukes or something. Society isn't prepared for seven lean years, so we'll all turn on each other in a desperate bid for personal survival. By the time the dust settles there just isn't enough people left to clean up the mess/diversify the gene pool, and the human race slowly dies out. I imagine the last homo sapien dying alone in some remote wasteland.

What about an Asteroid impact like 2002 NT7 which may hit us in 2019 or 2060?
