Can anyone reccommend a good PCI Controller Card that's compatible with FreeBSD?

Thats a little bit vague... What type of controller card are you talking about?

There are multiple vendors of PCI Raid Controllers and PCI SCSI Controllers.

SCSI cards are supported by all unixes and AFAIK Raid Controllers are too - not sure if the kernel source is available for promise/highpoint raid controllers.

Basically i suffered a complete physical hard drive failure and I am buying two new hard drives instead of just getting one because I need more room and I have the money for two. I was told that I would be better off buying a PCI Controller card because the new hard drives would have to clock themselves down to match the speed of the board because the board is slower than the newest hard drives out now would be and a PCI Controller card would keep them running at the speed they should and not the speed of the motherboard.

afaik highpoint is supported by freebsd. Only the interface of the drive is running slower, its not spinning slower or anything. What motherboard do you have? If its ata 66 you won't see any improvement from a controller card.

Just checked HighPoint's website. They're newer pci cards i.e. RocketRaid 100 and up support FreeBSD, as do most of their chipsets. Check their website first to ensure that there is a driver for the card you intend to buy.

Schro, i would have thought you would have even checked the freebsd website for this already my son.

Anyway have a look here lad. http://www.freebsd.org/releases/4.6R/hardware-i386.html#AEN32

basically it gives a list of the support for an out of the box freebsd 4.6 kernel.

    i.e Almost all HighPoint HPT366 ATA66, HPT370 ATA100, HPT372 ATA133, HPT374 ATA133 cards.

A new motherboard would help a lot in this case aswell. check komplett.ie for their stock and id recomend getting the card from them if you buy it at all and the hard disks.

    Regards,

    Paul
