I'd also like to ask this question.

Say if I logout and someone comes across my ship while I'm logged out - can they destroy it or what happens?

yes it can stil happen, you dont have to be logged in for people to interact with your ship/planets

    could try ...
    • stay in some fed space if your small
    • land one one of your planets
    • slap up some sector sefence and set your sector to "attacking not allowed"

Yes, most larger players won't attack smaller ships (unless they're feeling particularly evil :) ) because doing so would result in a large bounty being placed on thier head, which they would have to pay before being allowed to use the special ports.

Also, if you really wanted you could pay cash to spend time in sector 99 or 100. These are owned by the G-Police and no-one can attack these sectors (and hope to get away with it), so you're as safe there as anywhere else.

If your ship is destroyed, which can happen even if you logout in a planet then you'll find yourself back in sol if/when you log back in (sector 0).
