    Charter

(For info regarding posting as Unregistered, please see below in this post and also posts #6 and #8 below in this thread)

Right, well combining up a lot of the threads that have been stickied.
    Welcome to Personal Issues.
Hello firstly let me extend a warm welcome to the Personal Issues forum. The post below will outline some basic guidelines on how to use the board.

    Any suggestions (sensible) are welcome.

So here are a few guidelines.

Reply to threads in a civil and well phrased manner, remember being a Personal Issues board the contents of some threads may be very close to people's hearts.

Think carefully about what you're posting, remember it is the interweb after all and you may not be as anonymous as you think.

    Trolling will not be tolerated.

Petty differences with other boards members will not be tolerated.

Do not post links to Youtube, it is banned in this forum.

    - SheroN

This forum is for Personal Issues of all sorts, it is *not* a medical forum and see the links bit for links to medical stuff online, but feel free to post up problems as people may have personal experience, but don't expect miracle cures.
Only post on this forum if you have an actual problem, the more detail you give, the more accurate the advice will be.
Polls are not allowed as they are useless to a personal issue.

There is zero tolerance for muppetry here, and trolls etc. will not be treated lightly.
Suggesting violence as a problem solver is just not on in this forum and will result in an instant banning.

Any advice given should be mature, contructive and non-abusive. Opinions are welcome. Ridicule and nastiness are not.

If you have a problem you're embarrased about, then feel free to use the "Guest" option to post. You can do this by logging out and then posting. Abuse of this will not be tolerated.
Originally posted by Gordon:Anyone can post anonymously by logging out (if registered) and posting a reply. However, this cannot be abused, please. The owners/Administrators of boards.ie do have the powers to view any post's IP address but only as a last resort.

Anonymity is sacred but trouble making is most definately not.
What you say and what you do are all possessions of yours.

If you are a regular user posting as unregistered you cannot edit your unregistered post. And the Mods on Personal Issues cannot guarantee to edit your post the next morning if you have any regrets about what you posted. As we cannot guarantee that you are the original poster.

Therefore - please be careful about what you post as it may remain for all eternity

If you login and see that some posts are missing from a thread and/or edited, this generally means the posts were:
    a) Abusive
    b) Trolling/Flaming
    c) Off-topic

Trollers will be warned and banned (without warning if necessary). Check the recycle bin for the waffle that we remove.
Any problems with the moderators then feel free to PM us or take it to the Help Desk or Feedback Forum, we do not want threads taken off topic.

Originally posted by Beruthiel If you have been banned for x amount of time and we have neglected to un ban you due to us having lives/forgot/decided you should be banned for longer feel free to PM one of us

DO NOT set up threads in this forum specifically so you can complain that your thread had been deleted/moved to recycle bin or edited – this will result in you being banned
there was a reason we did this and if you have a problem then PM one of us and we will deal with it accordingly.

You only need to start one thread.
Starting numerous threads over a short period of time will be considered attention whoring and they will be closed.

Dragging up old threads is a no no and we will close them.

most of all, if you have nothing relevant to add to the topic, please refrain from posting anything at all.
Off topic behaviour will result in a ban.

*** WARNING: STUPIDITY IS A BANNABLE OFFENCE ***

Text Speak is possibly the most annoying thing EVAR to try and read! It makes you sound 14, and as such, people are likely to view your post as some teenage angst post. Hence your use of txt spk may result in incorrect advice due to misunderstandings from illegibility (if the post is your first post of the thread), unintentionally annoying posters and causing lingual aggravation, and in the worst case scenario it can get your post binned. Continue to flaunt against this rule and txt spk can get you banned from PI.

Any problems with people here? Feel free to use the "Report this post to moderators" option. If there is a general attitude from someone you've a problem with and it's not just a single post then PM/email a moderator with the details and we'll see what we can do.

Thanks to all who I have paraphrased from the different threads to try and get something short and sweet!

    Any suggestions are welcome

due to the amount of muppetrous threads of late, we have decided to do some preemptive modding (if it’s good enough for George…)
Anyway, if you are posting unregistered one of the mods will be having a look at it first to see if it’s a valid post or not. Please bare with us on this one and apologies in advance if it takes some time for one of us to have a look at it. We will of course make an extra effort to keep an eye on un reg posts as much as possible.

    please note

there is no need to re post your thread under the assumption that it got lost somewhere, it didn’t – we just haven’t checked it yet

Was set up by one of the UK health authoritys to provide a wide range of different types of condoms and lubes at the cheapest possible price. They sell condoms in all different ammounts but you can get realy huge savings if you are buying in 50's or 100's

If you are regularly having sex the expense of paying the over the odds prices that shops charge here for condoms can quickly become a problem. (They are also taxed in Ireland as luxuary goods buts thats a whole seperate argument)

They also sell both extra large and narrower condoms which can be difficult to source in Ireland.

, this could probably be posted on the "rip off Ireland" board as well

Also please note that even if you are registered with an account on boards.ie you may have to wait to be validated to post here. I will explain why and how you can stop this from happening forthwith toute suite etc etc

If you have not logged in and you decide to go to a thread and reply to the thread you will be asked to log in. If you do this then your post will get put into "wait for validation" mode. Therefore to stop this you will have to post after you have logged in. Sorry, it may cause you hassle but otherwise you'll have to wait until it gets validated by us lowly mods.

We are waiting for an admin solution to this but as we all know - admins are even lowlier than mods therefore they don't really do much around here but scrape up the cash from the bottom of the lift shafts. You know the deal.

Anyway, please log in before you post and everyone will be happy. Unless you are posting because you are not happy which is normally the case on this board of personal issues. If this is the case, I am sorry, hopefully you will find an answer here. But after you log in remember.... oh of course, unless you are unregistered.

    !

    Typedef - you've become famous! :D

for all those who need an explaination to the term Typedef

    Main Entry: typedef
    Function: intransitive verb
    Inflected Forms: typedeffed; typedef; typedef·fing

Meaning: to engage in sexual relations with an individual out of malicious intent for a somehow related third party, and ensuring said third party finds out, resulting in their emotional anguish. Can be used in several contexts, see below.

eg. "you ever cheat on me and I'll typedef you, I know your sisters up for it"
"the missus is being a bitch, should I typedef her sister?"

explanation brought to you by curtsey of Fitz

Just thought I'd pop up some of the links I've found good, as well as those I can see as being useful for people. Hopefully these might prove to be useful to the curious and those who suffer depression alike.

    http://www.theblackdog.net

It's mentioned in the charter, but I thought I'd talk a bit about it here. Very good articles on depression, it focusses mostly on depression in Irish males, but is not restricted to that. It deals with a variety of issues that effect people who suffer from depression in Ireland, such as weight gain, how to help a friend/family member with depression and other useful and interesting articles.

    http://my.webmd.com/content/tools/1/quiz_depression.htm?z=3628_81000_0000_12_01

This link is to a good depression screening test. If you are worried you might have depression, or are just curious this test might help you make that decision to go see your GP about the issue.

    http://depression.webmd.com

A useful collection of articles and advise here, with good short pieces on advice for newly diagnosed people, depression in different age groups and some information for parents on children with depression.

    http://depressionfallout.com/

A fantastic site for people who have someone close to them suffering from depression. It has some excellent articles on how depression effects relationships and the best means to support a loved one who has depression.

    http://depression.about.com/od/drugdatabases/

Some useful links to drug databases and the like, allowing you to get more information on the drugs you have been prescribed. Some of the sites include alot of information on possible side effects and things to avoid when on the drugs, useful information to have imo.

    http://www.icpty.ie/

The Irish Council for Psychotherapy Website. This should prove very useful for anyone who's thinking about going to therapy. It has good descriptions of the main approaches used so you can judge which would interest you before you attend and pay for therapy. It also has a full directory with addresses and contact numbers of psychotherapists in Ireland, which is very useful if you are looking to find a therapist in your area.

    http://www.maledepression.com

Another site focussing on depression and mood disorders in men. This time its from an American stand point though. The articles on it are an interesting read.

I hope the above links can be useful to people who have mentioned depression recently on this board. There is plenty information there for anyone who's interested in knowing more too :)

I felt that this thread would more constructive than me deciding to rant about depression and the misconceptions about it in Ireland that I was planning on writing originally. ;) See I'm channeling my energy in a semi-constructive fashion.

There are alot of other good sites out there, you can find links to them on most of the sites I recommended. I'm just too tired to go through all of them. Please add any good sites you've found to the list. I'm very interested in finding more information :) Oh and if you can't find the exact site you want from the above short list, remember google is your friend... ;)

As a poster on PI I am not for such a proposal.

As a mod on PI I am open to the possibility of such a happenstance but do not see it as being a problem for the community of the PI forum thus far*. However please feel free to embelish by way of links as to when and how such posts have been damaging to the forum and/or posters of PI.

*whether or not my fellow mods agree or not is another matter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,580 ✭✭✭✭Victor

Threads can and will be locked when they degrade into bickering, mass quoting, abuse and / or after "a certain time". Denigtating users, or their problems, being inappropriately judgemental, thread hogging, post tennis, using PI as a soap opera and demanding updates or other disruptive or non-constructive behaviours are not acceptable.

Posters are requested to leave fonts at the default settings unless there is a specific reason to change, e.g. for emphasis. Changing font, font size, colour, boldness, etc. makes it difficult for some users to read posts.

As some of you may know, there is a new forum Sex and Sexuality that is only available to subscribers and moderators. (to subscribe check this thread for details)

    As has always been the case with PI, this forum is not for freeflowing discussion of general sexual topics, just as it is not for any other topics that are not of one's Personal Issues. As always, topics of a sexual nature that are concerning ones personal well being are welcome on PI. By that I mean;

A topic asking for advice on how to broach the subject of an*l sex with ones girlfriend would be welcome on PI.
A topic looking for peoples experiences with an*l sex is a discussion, and hence would be better off in S&S.

Please read the Sex and Sexuality forum charter (in particular section 9) to get an understanding of what defines the forum from the PI forum. Threads will be moved at the PI mod's discretion, however, due to the fact that unregistered posting is not possible on S&S forum, we will try to reserve the right of the Unregistered poster's access to PI. Unfortunately, however, if the topic is more of a discussion than PI can allow; the thread will be moved and unregistered users will not be able to access the thread.

Just browsing through this thread. As much as I hate 'txt' style posting, is it worth giving people flak for this? Not everyone has had the same level of education- on other boards I subscribe to there are people who post like this all the time. It annoys me, but I think it's unfair to make it part of a charter. It runs the risk of excluding people. For what it's worth, I'm a bit of an apostrophe nazi, but I keep my judgements to myself, because it just pi**es people off.
There's a big difference between missing an apostrophe or having difficulty remembering when they are or aren't used and deliberately mkng tings mposble 2 read bcause u think ts k00l 2 do so.

Twice now I've seen 'dragging up old threads is a no-no' on this forum, and once a threat to ban someone if they do it again. Maybe include that rule in the charter? It's not obvious to me that one shouldn't do it: some might think it would be good to keep same issues on same thread. (No, I am not the dragger up).

All posts that are unregged have to be approved by a mod first!

A good plan for all posters is to actually read the OP's post, then read the replies, before jumping in. Saves getting wires crossed.

Folks, if this happens, you have three choices.

    2. Ask a PI mod to delete the thread.
    3. Be brave. :)

This thread is here to help people because of a current need. It is not for discussion. However, if you know of any other counselling services, please add their details (with website if possible) to the thread.

You will be aware of the Commission into Child Abuse report published this week. If you or someone you know would like to talk to someone there are some helpline details listed here.

If you would like face-to-face in the short term, your local doctor probably has a list of local counsellors. You may also be able to get in contact with counsellors who specialise in helping people deal with child abuse from various sources.

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/0521/abuse.html
    Rise in calls to helplines

Organisations that counsel victims of child abuse have been dealing with an increase in the number of calls to their helplines.

The surge follows the publication yesterday afternoon of the report detailing the abuse suffered by thousands of children in residential institutions.

Counselling services said the publication of the report had opened old wounds for many, and they received calls from people who had never spoken of their abuse before.
