hey thanks, just wondering what hotel he used in Bangkok.
did he got any vacinations before he left?
    how is the weather now?

he is diobier guest house. get the a2 bus from the airport straight to kohsan road. There are loads of hostels about there. he said that it was €3 a night. He didn't bother getting all the vacinations. he likes to live life on the edge :) i think that he got typoid and tetanus and a few others. I would play it on the safe side though. better safe than sorry.

and apparently the weather is crap at the moment. Its the rainy season. He reccomends not going till september.

any other questions, you know where to get me

and loving every minute of it. I haven't been north yet and have spent most of my time in the Krabi province (which if you're into rock climbing or want to get into it is the place to go). Travel around though, this really is a weird and wonderful country. I've had some of the strangest experiences of my life here and will come back even though I've been here for nearly 3 months.

    Okay, some advice.

Money - bring dollars, euros or sterling and travellers checks. Euros are good but 100 dollar bills get the best exchange rate and sterling is really strong at the moment. ATMs are everywhere too.

Accommadation - is getting expensive but out of season the lower end of the bracket is still quite good. It is the rainy season but it only rains about 2 hours a day. You'll still get cracking weather. If you come in September you could be paying upto 25 euros a night for a bungalow. I've been paying 2 euros a night but that place is for climbers only. We're very terratorial you see ;)

Vaccinations and meds - visit the Tropical Medical Bureau for the latest and greatest. Bring malaria pills of course and bring a really good antiseptic and antibiotic cream. Cuts will get infected and it's hard to clean them up with the humidity.

Whores - you've probably had your fill of them what with Amp and Regi and Dev and all.

    Bangkok - haven't been.

Hope that helps. Ahem, you can always visit my site. The link is below if you want to hear some stories from out in the field.

While you're there I recommend takin a trip to Siam Reap in Cambodia to have a look at the Angkor temples, it's dirt cheap to get there altough a temple pass is $40US or so for 3 days. Any of the kohsan road agents can sort u out. As for vaccinations I got the lot, including malaria tabs that give u mental dreams!

    Enjoy d trip!

And if you make it to Koh toa I recommend the banana rock bar...

Wook, there's this amazing thing on the net called Google, it gave me this:
    http://www.thaiembdc.org/consular/visa/visa.htm#list no visa

You're from <anonymous land>, you don't need a visa for a tourist visit lasting less than 30 days. Neither to Irish people.

thank you and thank you for the false sense of being 'anonymous'

On the same point, I'm heading back to SE Asia in a few months, and I'm planning on going to Thailand first and then onto Malaysia/Singapore.
I know when you arrive in Thailand, to get the 30 day visa you are supposed to show them proof of onward travel from Thailand.
I'm planning on flying into Thailand and then taking the train onwards, and flying out of KL.
Are they strict on the onward travel thing, or will they accept "I'm getting the train etc."? Anything I've read more or less says yes, but there always seems to be a "but" thrown in somewhere.

I wouldn't like to live in Bangkok, it doesn't look all that nice to me. I'd go for the view in the countryside, Wook!

looks a bit like Dublin....just as clean and just as organized :)

Nah, Bangkok looks totally manky to me, too over populated.
I;d rather go to the wilds, you know like Ray Mear's extreme survival type thing :-D

    Roughly?

I was there for a month and lived off 200 sterling(about 300 euro), but i was with a group staying on the cheap. I take it since your with girl you wont be doing that.

Well in a 5 star hotel in Chiang Mai it cost 14euro for a room. a posh meal would be about 5-7 euro and thats pretty expensive for over there.

My guess would be about 800-900 euro would be a fine amount to take with you.

Whatever ya do youll have a ball!
