Money in Europe

Hi - Sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm off on me holidays to France in a few weeks and I wondered what people's policy about taking money is now...

I know they have the same currency as us now and everything, but can I withdraw money commission-free when I'm over there, or should I take a big stash of € notes with me when I go?

    Cheers,
    helen.

I have been in France twice since the euro was brought in and IMO it is bloody great. So handy to use and you know exactly how much everything is costing instead of converting prices in your head.

You can use your banklink card to withdraw cash from the ATMs with the Visa Plus sign. The charge for this service is the same as here at 20 cent.

I presume its the same for BOI pass cards.

Any BOI pass card will work in any ATM over there with the Cirrus logo displayed (it's the one that looks like the Mastercard logo with blue and yellow circles)

AIB cards use the PLUS system afaik so the position is the same.

    Handy dandy.

Ulster bank customers can now withdraw cash abroad, handy for me as i'm going to Canada in 2 weeks and wasn't looking forward to withdrawing cash from my credit card!

They also work in Cirrus machines.

It certainly can, nothing like getting a pile o greenbacks.

Just look out for the Cirrus logo, and watch out on the commission charges, the cost is usually given ona palque by the ATM, and they vary wildly.

Well I just got back from some time in Paris, but some of the prices for things are totally obscene now - €8 for any drink (including soft) in a nightclub for instance, and €2.80 for an ordinary bottle of coke from a machine at Gare du Nord.

Are these just typical French prices or have they hiked them ridiculously in the hope of confusing people over the currency???

From my experience of France these are pretty normal prices for Paris. Have been down south also and the prices there are more like Ireland.
