EMS (Enhanced Messaging Service) is on the way right? But not yet available?

    1) Which network will support it, when?

    2) What phones will support it?

    3) What will happen when someone with an MMS capable phone sends an MMS message to a non-MMS capable phone? I've been told you'll simply get an SMS with the URL of a website where you can 'pick up' the message (photo +text +sound). Is that correct? If I'm a Vodafone Ready2Go customer will I get the URL of a part of MyVodafone where I can collect the message? Will MyVodafone STORE many of these messages?

Some info on MMS on the Nokia site
    http://www.nokia.com/mms/

Obviously it's Nokia-centric but does have some general info on MMS

They list the 3510, 7210 and 7650 as MMS capable.

vodafone and o2 support it now i think (may be incorrect - checking)

    2) What phones will support it?
a load of the nokia ones do - but very few ppl use it (may be incorrect -checking)

exactly right - the url gets sent out to the phone - it can be done as a sms or a push message - if you have wap you may be able to view a wap-able version of it too.

MMS won't be available here with o2 until september as far as i know. twas in the news paper the other week. as for vodafone i haven't heard one thing one way or the other so one must assume its not available as yet

yup, info in this thread from O2 (mmo2)
    announcing MMS details

No announcements from Vodafone IRL on MMS (as yet).

For a good backrounder, there is a great (PDF) paper here covering
EMS, MMS and the Future of Mobile Messaging

Actually what's most likely to happen when an MMS capable phone sends an MMS message to a non-MMS capable phone will be that the latter would appear to recieve a string of SMS's full of gobbledigook, with a few recognizable terms here and there, such as a URL or a label.

They've just launched MMS here in Austria. At the moment it's been offered as a free service. IE: It costs nothing to send one including GPRS charges. I've just sent one to myself even though I don't have a MMS-compatible fone and all i get is a message saying to check my MMSinbox. I just have to log onto my provider's site and then read it from there. It looks really kewl though. An idea of how much it will cost is: A picture on the site is 5.5kb, a sound is about 10kb (in .au format) which makes it an almost 16kb upload. This could be charged using a GPRS tarrif. It looks like a great service but few people are gonan use it cost the fone costs a bomb. Also the only people who could afford it are business people or those interested in fones. Will business people really use an SMS-type of service???? Me thinks no. Offer it to young people and it will take off but then networks do treat their young customers with contempt. Again off topic.

Is the client recognized at the network level then?

In Ireland I'd put money on the operators fscking it up when they launch it - too many echos of WAP and Premium Rate SMS (another disaster).

That's what I'm worried about. Will be back home for good in September (around when they are planning on launching 3G here) and will have to go back to the "old" ways. but to be fair to O2 etc.. WAP and Txt messages are quite cheap at home. WAP has failed everywhere coz 1) it worked dreadfully (waiting 30secs to connect and then it a lot of the time it didn't work) 2) Cost - an absolute rip-off!! Maybe they will see the light and actually ASK their customers what they, not just shove it down their throats thinking that they know best.

Just a note: You'd be surprised how many people use WAP, and Premium Rate SMS services.

The Ericson T-68 (updated software) and the "i" variant both support MMS as does the range of Nokia phones listed above.

I think it's safe to say that MMS will take off better than WAP did. It has practical uses whereas WAP really doesn't. For example, with the 7650/T-68i, you can take incriminating photo's of people and then send them ,via MMS, to someone else's phone.
