My guess is no, as they do not share the rights with anyone else - after all they did not block interactive access to the Chelsea flower show.

    What's your guess ?

    I second that emotion.

I would say that we will see Wimbledon via BBCi. But a precident has been set and those who say that it was blocked because it was not meant for RoI eyes will find out for sure then.

    Roll on Monday.

Oops! edit time! Theads merged :D

So what is the buzz, the feeling amougst you all?

Will we be watching other games via BBCi tommorrow on Irish Sky Digital subscriptions?

I think we will, the BBC have all the rights to this event, they fully control what is broadcast, unlike the World Cup. But I wont be surprised if its not.

    Any thoughts?

We'll find out for sure at 12 noon on Monday.

I expect we will have the full shamozzle:)
Theory being again, if it ain't costing them, they won't block it.
    Hope that is the case.
    Sorry Sky:D   :D

    Here's a thought.......

With NTL's current marketing strategy, would they have thrown the spanner in the works ???

I was giving the BBc the benefit of the doubt on this one...but not anymore:rolleyes:
Whats the possible reason for this blackout???
Don't tell me I have to go back to the them being spitefull again argument??
    They do hate the Irish.
I'm warming to NTL's radio adds they are very good, fair play to them for highlighting what they have vs Sky's BBC and no ITV/Ch4.
I suppose before I give out about getting my digital offering from Sky, I have to think about their  wonderfull:rolleyes: interactive services that they actually do provide to us Oirish people, and the 100's of channels they provide us with the cable co's.
But thats foreign providers for you.
    Rant over(for now)

Very pissed off over this whole Block Interactive For Ireland (BIFI)
thing. First E4 with Big Brud, then worse World Cup and now Wimbledon. well I called Sky in Scotland and asked them for the culprit and they referred me directly to BBC. And then I asked them about BB and they referred me to Channel4.

Have not had time to call them yet but in a word .. bast**rds

Are we not paying a little bit more over in ROI to compensate for BBC coming on ?

I find with interactive, that when i have it ,I dont use it, its when I dont have it I get annoyed, I suppose its the principle of the thing!!

Reply to email sent to bbci regarding lack of interactive service in ireland....
    Says it all doesnt it?

    Dear Mo.

Thank you for your e-mail regarding Interactive Wimbledon in the Republic of
    Ireland.

The provision of BBC services via the Sky system into the Republic is on
different terms to that in the UK and the BBC retains the right to disable
access to certain services where a contractual / rights problem exists. We
regret to inform you that with viewing rights for Wimbledon there is such a
problem and we have disabled the service.

We hope this information is of assistance.

    Thank you and best wishes.

    BBCi

    Hmmm,
Wimbledon interactive still alive and well on my ROI sub as of now:) with access to the different matches etc
    Whats going on I wonder?
Would Brian Cowen have brought it up at stormont today?:D

I suspect that some BBC or SKY engineer blocked the service to the ROI out of habit, without checking with the powers that be. As there are no rights issues the tech staff were told to unblock the service.

    I sure hope you're right eirman. :)

I'm not so much interested in tennis but was thinking more of new interactive stuff being blocked like Walking With Beasts.

I was amazed to see both World Cup & Wimbledon interactive running at the same time today.
I originaly thought there was only bandwidth for 3 fullscreen videos. Today there was 5 for Wimbeldon & 3 for the World Cup at the same time! 8 screens!
Then theres BBC England News regions for an hour at 6, which about 4 screens i think... and BBC news interactive, which is another fullscreen split in four..
Alot of stuff going being provided by BBC.. all available on my new trusty FTV card!
Glad to see Wimbledon on the sub card also!

Slightly OT- Does the interactive service work as long as there is play, even though BBC2 signs off at 8.30 every evening (unless there's a very exciting late evening match)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭trekster

Last year they stayed with coverage after the bbc program but since i dont like tennis (but i really like interactive features) i havent tuned in that long.

:D wahooooo gald to have it back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,079 ✭✭✭Gadgie

I watched earlier this evening and there was no BBCi logo in the right hand corner, however pressing red made the 'loading - please wait' logo appear and the text service load up.

Inside the text service there was an option to 'press select for Wimbledon interactive', which led to the infamous 'this service is not available in the ROI'.

    Glennus

Are you sure that pressing select was not for the BBCi World cup which still has the no roi service message.

I had no trouble accessing the service all night tonight by pressing text and then pressing the blue button and selecting Wimbledon.

Coverage is only available while matches are taking place though.

I had BBCi wimbledon all evening while play was in progress, pity the Irish Open was,nt interactive as well. Pity Sky dos,nt do igolf, then we might see more golfers rather than Tiger Woods all the time. I like Tiger, but he does suffer from a bit of over exposure by the US media to the detriment of other golfers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 157 ✭✭redabbey

The golf coverage on Sky of the Irish Open is in Widescreen and in normal 4:3 on RTE. I think the European Tour must have its own broadcast facilities because all their Tour is covered in Widescreen.

The Ryder Cup will be Interactive on Sky in September.

As will be the British Open on BBC TV in a few weeks.

no. I have no interactive wimbledon no interactive world cup just not available in Republic of Ireland same as Glennus. Wonder would a reboot work?

    mo

AFAIK Sky have the contract for European Tour broadcasting.

If you watch the euro tour coverage, the Sky commentators get to say... now over to the 12th where.... and then it changes to the 12th, etc.

Its a shame RTE can't seem to broadcast in widescreen.

Actually you're right - I was watching the highlights in the evening on BBC2 so that's why there was no live coverage. :o

One annoying thing about the Interactive tennis.

When watching on normal tv i.e. 25" fst nicam, the picture on interactive is widescreen and you then have to hit the 16:9 button to watch properly.(otherwise the picture is obviously distorted) When u exit the interactive the core transmission is normal. Any way around this or do you need to remortgage and buy a widescreen???

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,457 ✭✭✭dmeehan

the interactive wimbledon stuff works fine for me
but by the time i get home from work, most of the screens are live pictures of an empty court :-(

watched some guys trying to organise a mexican wave on court 18 yesterday

Some cards musn't be picking up whatever code the BBC is sending out to block the interactive services.... mind you this happened with ITV for a while too - this from the BBC website... www.bbc.co.uk/reception

Wonder what the problem is with E4... emailed them but of course they dont reply... to think that Dermot O'Learys parents are from Wexford... you'd think he'd want the same services for Ireland!!!!!!!

Why can’t I get World Cup Interactive via Sky in the Republic of Ireland?

The BBC cannot provide interactive World Cup coverage to Sky customers in the Republic of Ireland. This is due to rights restrictions. However, our World Cup coverage on BBC One is available as normal.
