Going on standby

Ok I have already posted this in the travel board, but it didn't seem to get the attention that i would like.

after seeing the Simpsons episode where homer goes to the airport and gets the cheap flights to japan

Question-is it possible to do that in Ireland?

I am thinkin of going to america during the summer and i wonder if this is a good idea to try to get standby tickets. a mate of mine said that it shouldn't be a problem, just wear a suit or something decent(incase you get put in first class), but i don't know. He also said to try the "death in family" thing to get ahead of the bunch. Now i am not really up for going that far, but i wouldn't mind trying to get a cheap flight some way.

so has anyone got any tricks to get cheap flights?

    suggestions appreciated!

Oh, and thanks to NeRb666 for his reply.

Try travel agents on a Thursday / Friday afternoon and they might have some flights / holidays going cheap.

Personally I thought the response to your previous thread was accurate and informative.

Having a background in the business I can tell you there is no such thing as stand-by tickets from Ireland.

Also airlines do not sell off their seats cheap a day or two before departure. In most cases the earlier you book the cheaper the fare.

If you want a cheap fare to the US I would suggest you start checking now with Delta, Aer Lingus, Continental, BA and travel sites like ebookers.ie. Do not wait until the last minute as flights to the US are very heavily booked during the summer.

sorry about the duplicate threads bucks73. I posted the thread again in after hours because i felt that i might get a little more information about the situation. monty though felt that it didn't belong there and kicked it from after hours and back to travel section.

thanks for the replies by the way

No problem The_Bullman. Just trying to help you out.

As for stand-bys from England all the major and low-cost airlines do not sell stand-bys. As far as I am aware tour operators do sell off package holidays or seats on charter flights to holiday destinations at much lower prices at the airports. This is of course depending on the number of seats and accomodation available. If you were looking for a one or two week break in Spain, Portugal etc. you would probably get something but the choice would be limited. For the US this would only apply to Florida as this is where the charter flights from the UK fly into.

As for the price of these, after paying for the flight over and allowing for the cost of sterling there would probably be little or no saving.
