Here is an extract from the Johnny Vaughan show at the weekend -for those of
    you who missed it:
Vaughan is interviewing ArdalO 'Hanlan (aka -Fr. Doughal McGuire from Father
    Ted)

JV: Ardal, many congratulations on the late goal against the Germans
(cue much cheering among predominantly English audience).

Ardal: Cheers Jonny, it was a great occasion for us
(cue more subdued cheering this time).

JV: So Ardle, could you please answer this burning question "Why, given that
we English are always delighted to see the Irish team do well, do the Irish
fans dislike the English so much?!!"
(cue a collective inquisitive 'yeah?' from the audience).

Ardal: Well, Jonny I'd say that was more down to the 800 years of repression
to which you've subjected our people, and the fact that you still occupy 6
counties in our country more than anything else......................
(cue one guy standing and clapping his hands as loud as he possibly could
    amid a very quite audience...!!!)

Yeah, saw it. Everyone looked a teensy bit uneasy when he said it.

Yeah there is still a lot of ill feeling towards the English here. I know friends who would be more upset if the English did well than if we did badly.

Personally the main reason why I wouldn't want to see them win it is that they'd never shut up about it.

For anyone who remembers the time Frank Leboeuf kept saying "But we won the world cup" on They think its all over ... multiply that by about 20 Million people!

Would have loved to have seen the interview tho.
