As for the second one, could you say if it has to do with the actual meaning of the word, or something like the physical appearence of the word?

Ok, i doubt this is the answer you were looking for, but here it is:
The word Cliff belongs in the first row.
The first row contains only words that do not have the letter r occupying an odd position (i.e. 1, 3, and 5).
Front is the only word with an r, and that is in the 2nd position - even.
