Best Movies So Far This Year?

So, almost 5 months into the year, what have been the best cinema releases ??

Its been a fairly weak few months, as far as I'm concerned. <asbestos>Episode 2 was a disappointment</asbestos>, Panic Room was over-hyped, Black Hawk Down was booooring, so was Ali ....

Best for me (so far, anyway) have been The Count of Monte Cristo and Dog Soldiers - funnily enough, both made in Europe.....

Next 7 months look much better, with Two Towers, Harry Potter 2, Minority Report, Spiderman, MIB2, Austin Powers 3, Signs, Ring (english version), Analyse That, Pokemon 4 *** .....

    Any thoughts ??

    (*** just kidding!)

Best film I've seen so far this year has been Amelie. But I'm looking forward to The Two Towers blowing my mind :)

    Gandalf.

Haven't really watched that many films this year.

Star Wars Episode 2 - I went to see it with my friends and we had a good laugh.

Spiderman- Stays faithful to the comics.

Not sure what was this years film.

Ring is an old film, check out Savoy music and forbidden planet for Ring0 Ring2 and Ring3 although I don't like them, I think Ring ( 1 ) is best.

Enigma was ok, story about carcking the code lots of Nazi U-boats and stuff.

Crowe has done well for himself, and I liked most of the Lord o the Rings flick but the book series seemed better.

no real film has stood out for me this year, but then again I don't watch much hollywood stuff.

    Irish film?
Rat, I went Down, Disco Pigs and Waking Ned were ok.

I might go n see Spiderman

Saw the japanese Rings. The one I'm talking about is an english language version, due out later this year.

Hmmmm, so far this year, well, there have been a lot of movies out that I didn't get a chance to see that I'm looking forward to seeing on DVD, but out of what I've seen in the cinema Blade 2 was a lot of fun.

    Amelie
    Royal Tenebaums
(both have the same narrator idea that works well )
Crimson Rivers ( i think that was this year )
Brotherhood of the Wolf ( this year too i think )

this yr been really crappy for films nothin much on but eh the surprise good film that made me laugh in loads of places was Slackers. really good funny bits!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,275 ✭✭✭Shinji

Dog Soldiers - enjoyed it thoroughly even on a second viewing. Bound to be a staple of drunken DVD viewing for years to come.

Blade 2 - immensely silly and a lot of fun on the big screen. Again, I think alcohol might be required for further appreciation; Dog Soldiers was clever and funny, Blade 2 is stupid and cool... :)

Vanilla Sky - weak final 15 minutes or so, but other than that a SUPERB film. Massively entertaining and intriguing, and even that ending can only slightly spoil the film.

Attack of the Clones - Great final half hour, pretty rubbish otherwise. A lot of time spent thinking about what might have been if it'd had a better director and a better actor playing Anakin.... Oh well. Still one that'll inevitably be pulled out to watch occasionally in coming years, I'm sure.

Yea i reckon dog soldiers(went to it twice) and the count of monte cristo r teh win.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 622 ✭✭✭darthmise

I'd have to agree with Shinji and say Vanilla Sky, blew me away.

i take it Dog Soldiers is worth seeing so?

Only got to see Memento There last week, so thats an amazing film for me this year.

    Royal Tenenbaums
    Dog Soldiers
    Episode 2 (fun!)
    Blade 2 (fun fun!)
Lord Of The Rings (if that still counts)

For some reason my mind draws a blank as far as other films go

I doubt Harry Potter 2, MIB2, Austin Powers 3, Analyse That, or Pokemon will be any good though, but I am looking forward to seeing what Jackson will do with the Two Towers.

Ring (English version) will most likely be awful. Imagine Ringu, but lacking the suspense and scare-me-****less-ness. It's like Scream. Urgh.

Hmmm.... Well I've only been to the cinema 3 times this year (they don't let me out that much) and that was to see Amelie (twice) and AOTC. Thought both were great but I don't have many films to choose from ....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

    Definetly Dog Soldiers!

    Low budget, sick and twisted.
    FULL of one-liners.

One of the best one-liners in the film was the little piss-take of the Matrix.
You all know what I'm talking about!
    Had me in ****ing stitches!!!

I have to say i really enjoyed The Count Of Monte Cristo. Apart from that, Ocean Eleven and Attack of The Clones are the only others that stand out. But, Spiderman is out next week !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

... Spiderman is out the week after next.

Next week is Denzil Washington's new thriller, John Q.

Amelie is one of the best movies I have ever seen.

Excellently put together and executed with some of the most engaging acting I've seen.

Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones gets my vote for best *epic* of the year. It ran rings around Episode I, having everything it lacked...namely a sense of adventure:D

Been a fairly good year for movies overall though...Beautiful Mind was another contender IMO. Jeniffer Connolly is hot property (as well as hot ass:D)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,322 ✭✭✭phobos

    Oceans Eleven

    Attack of the clones

    A Beautiful Mind
(excellent movie, how did Crowe not win an award for this  )

There are always going to be more, but sure you couldn't expect me to remember them, until I've just clicked disconnect. Typical :)

    ;-phobos-)

    amelie

did nobody else like Black hawk down?

the count of monte cristo - consistently entertaining.

the royal tenenbaums - funniest film i've seen in a long time.

    Spider-man

I liked it. Just not going to win any awards. Real "switch off and be entertained" stuff :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

Well I'd like to add Spiderman to my list, excellent stuff.

Also best DVD film of the year (so far) is "Life as a House" R1.

Biggest pile of cr@p is Star Wars AotC. All those that posted this obviously don't get out to the cinema much :)

    Gandalf.

    (flameproof_suit = on)

Amelie and the Royal Tenebaums were good, Y Tu Maman Tambien (spelling?) was better. Training Day takes the gong for me though ending was a bit weak but overall just an incredible film.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,199 ✭✭✭Jimi-Spandex

    Royal Tenenbaums was quality

    Blade 2 was a laugh

I'd say Amelie also but it was released last year

For me I think Minority Report , I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

You can add Minority Report to my original post, waaay back at the top of this thread!

Spiderman makes the top 10, while AotC is well outside the top 10....

And Black Hawk Down is STILL sh1t !!
2 hours of people shooting guns and blowing stuff up, without ANY excitement or tension. Snoozefest. :D

    - Dave.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 875 ✭✭✭EvilGeorge

Have to agree with you on black hawk down , its not the best - found it amusing for a bit - haha look at the americans getting shot - but then put me to sleep.

Well I hope to add the two towers to the list in December!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,202 ✭✭✭Swifty

Spiderman and Panic Room. Haven't gone to the cinema an awful lot this year.

I just saw Ringu this year when it was on channel 4, it made me soil my pants, alot.

Actually I would give that award to Monsters Ball. Quite possibly the worst film I have ever seen in the cinema.

    Best this year...
    Spider-Man

Mostly Seamus has been extremely disappointed.

Liked Spiderman and The Count of Monte Cristo (and Oceans 11)as popcorn movies that did precisely what was required and little more.

Royal Tenenbaums was quite good in a quirky way. I liked A Beautiful Mind.

Minority Report was perfectly acceptable but Spielberg seems to be confusing techno and making social commentary in his desire to make the ultimate sterile Kubrick movie.

Can't think of anything else (which is particularly bad given that I've been to the cinema an average of once a week)

Disappointing year on the whole. No drama that stands out as a classic (Gosford Park missed the boat slightly, though the acting was superb). No comedy that will stand out even at the end of the year. Not even a human interest biopic with the exception of A Beautiful Mind (which really counts as one of last years). No good action flick imho. Almost six months to go though.

aye amiele is a 2001 release for those mentioning it..

oooooooohhhh "XXX", saw it in Canada last month. Not only does it have the cream-inducing Vin Diesel in it, but 90% of the cast are hot, and the scenery is beautiful (Prague....before the rains came :-D ) and there's some kick ass extreme sports stunts.
Yes, it's brain candy, but it looks awesome, and has a brilliant heavy metal soundtrack.

Also, "The Mothman Prophecies", fantastic freak-the-sh|t outta you film. Made me jump a few times :)

Ocean 11 and Star Wars episode 2 are the only films to stick out in my mind this year. There have been an awful lot of nearly there films though.

Monsters ball isn't a bad flick either, just a film you really have to be in the mood to see.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,922 ✭✭✭Dave

EP II is by far the worst movie i've seen this year. The only thing that kept me watching was natalie portman and the brillant cgi.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,779 ✭✭✭Ping Chow Chi

    hi Dave :D

    Spiderman

reminded me of all them comics I read as a child

It was so much fun, unlike

    Starwars ep 2

which was pants for a number of reasons that we wont get into here :)

I just cant remember the films i saw this year-the only good ones i can remember is Minority report,The guru(i quite enjoyed it),frailty.

Thats as far as my memory span can go back to-there has got to be better ones than these this year-just cant remember!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,489 ✭✭✭Clintons Cat

The Guru was great in the same kind of vien as "coming to america",the simpsons gag was great,as was the pissed swarmi.
A good film for a first date.or lazy sunday afternoon

Also enjoyed The One with Jet Li,Sort of Highlander meets the terminator with a bit of the matrix thrown in for good measure

One to Avoid "The Adventures Of Pluto Nash" What was Eddie Murphy thinking of when he signed up for this pile of Poo?Spacetruckers it aint.Hell its not even as good as the aging space balls.
This movie gets just about everything wrong the pacing is terrible, the mix of humour and over gratuitous gunplay grates the nerves, and murphy never pulls out the stops to make the gunfights seem like anything more than over enthusiastic cgi .
Labouring murphy with a lumbering obselete robot bodyguard thats too slow to keep up seems to be the raison d'etre for this movie, the whole pitch seems to have been based around this concept which keeps cropping up in various guises throughout the movie
    • Robot to slow to keep up during chase
    • robot runs out of power during escape
    • robot tries to (unsucessfully) disguise it self in hilarious oversize wig

AN OVERSIZED WIG !!!Movie Jokes about Wigs, its like Benny Hill never died a lonely and bitter old man,but somehow survived to wreak his revenge upon us all,by giving us Jokes about Oversized Wigs...Curse You Hollywood Producers,Curse You all to hell.

Finally as the movie grinds towards what might under normal circumstances be called a climax,Guess What, theres a plot twist.
Not a normal plot twist mind, but a plot twist that makes no fu<king sense whatsoever. Its so illogical and contrieved as to make you want to rip the DVD out of the player and stamp on it.
By this point you really wont care if the bad guy gets away with it,you will probally be secretly rooting for him, anything to get the movie over before the its last slide into gushing sentimentality that was meant to give the audience a feel good factor, but actually left them quietly wondering if it was really such a wise move for a grown up to be watching a movie about talking robots.

    Avoid,Or be damned
