    Just a quick question...

What is the best way to transfer large chunks of information over from a Laptop with WIN98 with a serial port and an USB port to a Desktop running WINME also with s Serial Port and an USB port

Preferably cheap/free, and relatively easy to setup/use

    Any suggestions or help appreciated.

    -Dave

You could take the hard drive from the laptop and install it as a primary slave in the desktop.
Then just mount the HD from win98 and you should be able to transfer the data from there.

What is now was once only imagined.

Another way which might be easier is to use direct cable connection in WIN 98. All it requires is a null modem cable and 2 serial ports.

When you say "Large" are we talking 50, 100mb or more.
If its 100MB or more, i would say, rip the drive out of the Laptop and stick in it the Desktop, serial transfers are so slooow.
Get urself a copy of Laplink as DCC(software) sux big time.

Better still, if you have network cards, get a crossover cable and use them. Network cards for desktop PC's are dirt cheap, and *most* laptops seem to come with them as standard, but afaik pcmcia network cards can be quite expensive :/

Laptop hard drives are a different size and have different connectors to standard desktop PC hard drives and so it's not as simple as ripping the drive out and shoving it in as a slave. Converters are available, but are not cheap.

Your best option is either a program like Laplink or 5:30 and a parallel or serial transfer cable (as in Repli's second reply) - which is SLOW, but works... or networking the two machines together (as in Stephen's reply) - which is a little more expensive but is FAST and beneficial in that a network card is always a handy addition to a PC or Laptop anyway.

If you are lucky( ie its suitable for your laptop hard drive) ,you could you could get a pretty cheap laptop to desktop hard drive converter,Marx Computers-Mobile Rack for Hard drive are only charging £19.44 for them.

    Thanks lads.

The laptop has a pcmcia network card already so im figuring networking is going to be the best option.

    Cheers

    Good choice assassin.

I got a couple of Realtek 10/100 PCI cards from Scan as part of my last order. They work very well and are only ST£9.40 each (inc VAT)!

Yeah Dave, you'll have no bother picking up a 10/100 network card for your desktop machine. Just make sure you get a CROSSOVER CABLE (I'm presuming you don't have a hub), not a normal cable.
