I found a good way of learning a lot of the little things was to visit the BlackNova site itself which you can find a link to on the game. Read the forums and you can learn a lot :)

Find 2 trading ports within 1 turn of each other and start trading. build up your moneyand then up grade your ship. better to start with hull that way you can carry more. You pick it up as you go along tbh if you have any other questions just post them up.
