Only fools and horses, god you can't but laugh at that show - gem:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,379 ✭✭✭Mills

Hmmm, out of that list, Father Ted.

Out of sit-coms currently running.... I like Scrubs, a lot.

Friends used to be funny (I'd forgotten just HOW funny until I saw an old episode there last week) but the new eps aren't up to much.

Frasier was good there for a while but the current series just isn't up to scratch IMO, the two before were good though.

    father ted, its a classic.
but what about the others mentioned above like only fools and horses, and bottom?? and other classics like fawlty towers, and ello ello??

[ok maybe not so much ello ello]

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,922 ✭✭✭Dave

    » Seinfeld
    » Drew Carey Show

    Also SCRUBS isn't a sitcom.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 198 ✭✭EL_Diablo

I'm surprised no one has mentioned one of the all time classics. Steptoe and Son. "You dirty old man." "aaaaaaarrroold" lol
But out of that list its really hard to choose between Fr. Ted , Seinfeld and Cheers. But I'd probably say Fr. Ted because while the other shows can sometimes have more consistent gags, a lot of the Fr. Ted jokes were the kind of ,on the floor gasping for breath in between laughs, jokes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,709 ✭✭✭Balfa

how can you exclude fawlty towers from this line up?? the sitcom which is acclaimed and heralded as the best by most reputible organisations out there!

But this list looks as though it's done by and for people who are far too young to be judging on such things :P

this is made more evident by the amount of people voting for scrubs. people with little to no memory, who can't remember anything they watched over a month ago. It doesn't always follow that what you're watching right now is the best. Scrubs is good, but it's no classic. It'll be forgotten in 10 years time, unlike fawlty towers.

My top five are fawlty towers, father ted, blackadder, red dwarf and friends.

besides, there's something drastically wrong with any alleged "best sitcom ever" poll that includes only one and a half british comedies.

(father ted counting as half because although irish, it's in the style of british comedy).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭DapperGent

Good god I voted other! It's a toss up between Fawlty Towers and Frasier for the best ever.

what aboout the young ones!!!!! the funniest show ever

that was a great show.... what about the show bottom... or men behaving badly.....

so are so many great shows out there.... most of the older shows are better than the new ones we have today

    Fawlty Towers
    Thrid Rock From The Sun
    That 70 Show
    Ab Fab
    The Drew Carey Show
    Yes Minister
Scrubs (Of course it is just because it hasnt got canned laughter)

I used to think that a sit-com was when comedies had audiences and they were sitting thus sit-com. of course sitcom means situation comedy and Scrubs is certainly a sitcom.

    To many to mention.

Not Father Ted (the only comedy i dont like) no.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

Scrubs is absolutely fantastic - extremely funny and not your standard american sitcom type at all.

Regarding laughter tracks: I once seen a Friends episode without any canned laughter - I honestly didn't know whether they were making jokes or not. One of the least funniest sitcoms on telly at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,817 ✭✭✭✭po0k

Drew Carey Show. Don't know if it got a mention allready but I think it's great. The chick in it is yer wan (the Whitewashman-type Doctor's wife) in Scrubs aswell. MMMmm....

Father Ted, Cheers and Red Dwarf are both class aswell. Should have been a multiple choice.

{edit} Ara for teh love of Saint Theoussis and the Purple Frog of Mongo, just read some of the above posts.

Scrubs, 3rd Rock, 70s Show, Only Fools & Horses, Bottom (Exploding Carrots, Cattle Prods, Wombles and Stained coloured tights), Dharma & Greg, 'Allo 'Allo, Fawlty towers, Blackadder, Mr. Bean and the intellectual desert that is Frasier. There are more but I'm drained and on my way out fora pint.

    Will & Grace is just nuerotic Shíte. David Schwimmer is the most GRRRRRrrrrrr! (:mad:) inducing twat I've ever seen.Seinfeld just...isn't...funny... Fúcking cranky whining little biatches complaining about their 'bagel', whatever that is. {/edit}

Toss up between Only Fools & Horses and Fawlty Towers.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,922 ✭✭✭Dave

Well if SCRUBS is a sitcom then Ally McBeal is a sitcom and Sex and The City is a sitcom?

Also I forgot "That 70's Show" Red is one of the funniest characters ever.

    Dictionary.com to the rescue!
    situation comedy
    n.
A humorous radio or television series featuring the reactions of a regular cast of characters to unusual situations, such as misunderstandings or embarrassing coincidences; a sitcom.

    situation comedy
n 1: a humorous drama based on situations that might arise in day-to-day life
2: a humorous television program based on situations that could arise in everyday life
Hmmm... so I assume that Scrubs has a regular cast and shows their reactions to 'unusual situations'.
But from what I've seen of the adds - scrubs doesn't really base itself around events that could happen in 'everyday life', but sways more towards the charictors themselves being total nutcases and setting out to create the comedy themselves.

My own take on the definition of 'sitcom' would be that the charictors behave within the real-world norm of their role and conform more to reality.
Some of the things I've seen the doctors do on Scrubs would land them up for numerous mal-practice suits, yet they appear week after week ;)

And how come there was no option for Married with Children, yet Different Strokes (is that even a sitcom, wasn't funny if it was) gets a place?

    hey everyone
i know this is probably going out on a limb but does anyone like grounded for life? i think the writing is so cool and the acting is brill im not saying i hate it but what is the big deal with friends fr.ted isnt strictly a sitcom i dunno... its different.
i dont get the red dwarf thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭DapperGent

The Larry Sanders Show deserves a mention aswell very good ("Bring out that guy that plays the piano with his ass!") Seriously though there are far too many good shows to have a proper poll.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,315 ✭✭✭Occidental

Grounded for life is excellent, but then I also think the same for Malcolm in the Middle.

Best UK comedy: Blackadder, Young Ones/Bottom, Only fools and horses

    Best US: Cheers

How on earth did Different Strokes ever make it on to the list.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 243 ✭✭CHRISTYG

    1= Only Fools and Horses

    1= Fawlty Towers

    3. Friends (but only the early series- gone really downhill in the last 3 years)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

Nobody has mentioned it yet, a true gem.

Whatever Happened to The Likely Lads.

Going against the grain, a sequel that was better than the original 60's series.
Thank God I didnt see Ant and Dec's remake on Saturday night! Awful, I understand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

Sex in the city and Ally McBeal are Drama/Comedies. Scurbs has very little drama in it, so yes it is a Sit-com or at least a comedy(It is funny anyway).

I would say that Thrid rock is a sit com yet it could never happen. at least i dont think so????????????????

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9 FrostyThePeanut

Father Ted out of that list anyway , but nothing even comes close to Del-Boy and Rodney

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,004 ✭✭✭The Gopher

Only Fools and Horses no doubt. Its such a classic. From Dels"you plonker"putdowns,Rodney being a complete tit,Triggers complete stupidity in every situation,Dels French phrases(the very best was when he finished a tatsy dinner and told his girlfriend"MMM,that was lovely.Pas De Calais as they say in France" :D:D:D )classic scenes with chandiliers and Batman and Robin,i could go on all night.Best sitcom ever.
Following closely is Fr Ted,with so many classic one liners, particularly from Fr Dougal.
Does the Royle Family count as a sitcom seeing as theres no audience? If it does its a classic too.
