i dont agree with heskey going he isnt that good in my opinion natt jansen or even andy cole would have been better for the job at hand as heskey is not very consistant

    Danny Murphy...on standby?!
Danny Mills rather than Jamie Carragher????

Oh well there were always going to be a few odd choices.

    Mike.

p.s. Just seen story on www.football365.com
which says Carragher is carrying an injury,
    according to Liverpool f.c.

Well Heskey is most people's favourite to actually start the first game, let alone make the squad.

A while back, leading authority Mark Lawrensen (an Irishman!) reckoned they would line up as:

    Seaman
[G Neville] Campbell Ferdinand A Cole
    Beckham Scholes Gerrard Dyer
    Heskey Owen

with presumably Owen Hargreaves now being favourite for that right-back slot.

I think Wes Brown or maybe Danny Mills is the prefered right back. Owen Hargreaves is a midfielder. I reckon Carragher should be in the squad instead of Mills as he can play anywhere along the defense and also the holding player in midfield whereas Mills is a nutter who'll get sent off after 5 mins.
    Cheers

    Help me here.

Im trying to figure out why Butt is in the squad instead of Murphy. To put it politely he is sh**e. Macca should have been there too. Cole and Dyer are brilliant but no experience. He should have brought Macca for experience and variety. As it is the English squad consists of all English based footballers bar Hargreaves. That's their biggest downfall.

I think Murphy and Macca should be there instead of Cole and Butt. Thank god the Neville sisters won't be there. Hate the sight of them.

    Seaman
    Mills Campbell Keown Ferdinand

    Beckham Gerrard Hargreaves

    Scholes

    Owen Heskey

Three names i would have named on england squad
Le saux (or Le nasty might be more appropriate)
    David Dunn
    Matt Jansen
    Ugo Eghiou
    .....and Ray Parlour

withdraw the following: Nicky Butt, Danny Mills, Darius Vassel and Wes Brown.

It would have been an almighty boost had they snared Alan Shearer back

Nicky Butt is supposed to have been a revelation of late - almost playing better than Scholes in the United midfield. He didn't look that good on Wednesday though so maybe the expert opinion is flawed?

well possibly he does show commitment to Man Utd as i think he's a local fellow though and it wouldnt be hard to beat Veron on that Stake. however i think he is not international class and is pretty ordinary. He is also a nasty piece of work that could be a certain to see red in the argentina game. Not saying that Ray parlour is an angel but in the last two games he showed alot of movement and commitment to the cause & like his team mate Keown he would give the opposition alot of hassle. Danny Mills as a friend of mine said earlier on has bad self control and even worse ball control. Vassel reminds me too much of a mixture of Yorke/Kanu where he overplays time and time again and never tracks back to retrieve and Wes Brown, well, well what can i say, diabolical!!! As a finale i think David Dunn has as much to offer as Steven Gerard though not taking away Gerard is an important member. other choices id be happy with however

Yeah, I don't see why Vassell deserves to be in the squad either. A couple of goals in meaningless England friendlies don't take away the fact that his form for Villa has been diabolical in the second half of this season. I still think McManaman should have gone, maybe instead of Vassell as the midfield is potentially very much more depleted than the strike force with doubts hanging over Beckham and Butt.

i too think bowyer should have been in the squad, and yes i am a leeds fan but he would give 110% for England. Also, i would be a bit wary of mills, cos he is prone to the not-so-odd rash tackle, but so are butt and scholes. ohh and good to see the neville sisters, as someone earlier put it, arent going.
anyways so long as Ireland get further than England i dont care who erickson brings

A while back, I said England would surprise us.....

after that team selection I dont think so.....

    Owen Hargreaves is a midfielder

Who has played rather well at right back for bayern this season.

McManaman should definetely have been selected as should Bowyer. I don't rate Heskey much, and Darius Vassel is a bit of a joke imo. Still hes better then Andy Cole.

Odd odd odd. The striker selection is BIZARRE - I'm not even talking about Vassell, but Teddy Sheringham? For the love of god! I had actually been joking with various people in the lead up to the squad announcements about England's striker selection saying 'Heh, watch now, they'll be playing Sheringham', not for a moment thinking they could possibly be bringing that coffin-dodger onto a world stage again. Ugh.

On the subject of midfielders, I'm glad to see Hargreaves made it despite the fact that he plays in the Bundesliege, but there are some glaring omissions... namely McManaman and Bowyer.

They've also got some dodgy selections in defence - Danny Mills is is just plain crap, and Gareth Southgate is past it. And er, excuse my ignorance, but who is Wayne Bridge?

Ah I don't care anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing them crash out in the group stages :P

Wayne Bridges plays for Southampton, which is why you hav'nt heard of him! He's good, but proberly will only see action in an emergency.

Teddy Sherrignham is worth a berth, as someone pointed out on telly in latter stages of a game in the heat and humidity his
thinking ability will be more important than the pace of other players.

    Mike.

Bowyer is not elligible to play because of court cases and the like

Not eligible? Not politically correct you mean, surely?

I agree with the prevailing thought that Macca should be in there. A country with the hooligan problems of england could not be seen to pick boywer and fair play to em.

Looking at the squad englands big problem is midfield, it will be interesting to see how scholes and gerrard (which i assume is the starting central pairing) will cope with more assertive midfields.

    News Just In!

    Dyer out , Gerrard doubtful.
Murphy in and Trevor Sinclair on standby!

Not sure if that means the midfield is better, worse or about the same just different.

    Mike.

What the hell is he bringin in Sinclair for - sure he's a good player but Macca should be broght in. FFS:mad:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 126 ✭✭bobsmith833

I guess in the handful of games Sven's seen Macca in for England he's not been that good, and because he "can't be bothered" to go to Nationwide or foreign games, he fails to see the world class performances for Real Madrid. Murphy's a good player, but he's not world-class like Gerrard and probably doesn't have the flair that Dyer or McManaman do.

Rumour has it that Ashley Cole will now move up to left midfield with Wayne Bridge doing left back.

no dyer is a big blow for them.....

And er, excuse my ignorance, but who is Wayne Bridge?

wayne bridge is the Southampton full back that is deputising for Ashley Cole, however i reckon he has as much to offer as Cole defensive wise. A very good player Bridge.
