I've been meaning to do this for ages now....
I can put together site with HTML no problem. That's easy enough.
But getting my own custom stuff up to my webspace is proving tobe a hassle.
I need 1. URL for free hosting.
    2. Details of exactly how to upload/manage my files using Ws_ftp or similar - or indeed any good free FTP program u'd care to reccomend.

Don't start flaming this. I like hardware and tweaking more then scripting/coding etc. atm cos hardware is tangible, even when windows can't detect that old piece of ISA plu-'n-play.......

PS whats the username + password for Eircom ISP?

Try www.freeservers.com , free hosting and has a built in FTP so you just need to locate the HTML pages on your hard drive and upload them.
    Hope this helps.

    Try www.f2s.com aswell.

either way, when yer using an FTP Program (I recommend Cute FTP btw) you'll just need three things to get connected to the server.

1.) The ftp address. eg "ftp.yoursitename.f2s.com", if you were with f2s.

2.) Yer Username, which you choose when signing up for the webspace.

3.) Yer password, which you also choose when signing up.

If yer using CuteFTP, open it up and goto View -> Toolbars and check the "Quickconnect" option. (or just press F8). This'll give you four input fields. In the first one you put in 1.) as shown above, 2nd 2.) as shown above and in the third 3.) as shown above. You can leave the final one as "21".

Most of the webhosts will have a FAQ showing how to connect, but that^ should do it.

Also, what is this tom_thebox ?
Virus? hacker/cracker?I had CuteFTP 4.2 I think, but it was only the trial one. Can i get a freeware one with just basic file management stuff?

By far the best FTP Program for the beginner is "FTP Explorer".
Im sure you can find it for free if you do a search.
If not, you can drop me a mail.

Try http://www.ftpvoyager.com/ it is free and very easy to use. After 30 days you just get a message asking if you wish to buy, this can be cancelled and you can keep using it.

A very novice attempt, must get one of the HTML books soon. Thanks for the help lads(and lassies, sheep, bears, etc.)

Might have a look into getting a web-cam running. I intend getting a scanner too, I got some good ideas for a site.

    User ID: syxpak
password: (u don't really need to know this)

    it keeps saying:
!can't get "the above URL" host entry
    !Conection failed "the above URL"
