Ashamed to be Irish after last nights game

    The team were great!

I was at the match last night, I arrived ten minutes into the match & noticed that the crowd was booing the US no.10. This continued for the rest of the match.

I was hoping that he (US no. 10) had committed some dirty foul in the 10mins I missed and not that the crowd was giving a repeat performance of the booing of the Ranger player for 3 weeks ago (the crowd got it wrong for 80min on that occasion, booed the wrong guy - twats!).

Today I learned the sad truth, he was being booed because he was a rangers player. How sad it is to realise that your fellow country men are bigoted twats.

The IFA should make a public statement about this sad behaviour.

    dooh meant FAI

Erm, ok but what this has to do with the IFA (Irish Football Association- the North) I'm not really sure. I think you wil lfind that getting the FAI to do anything on this will be impossible.
Its a bit pathetic alright, booing him, especially as he now plays with Sunderland with Niall Quinn.

Errr the IFA already did over the booing of Neil Lennon in Windsor Park. I think you mean the FAI need to make a statement and I agree with you wholeheartedly.

I mean Reyna plays for Sunderland now who have 3 Irish Internationals on their books. Who cares if he played for Rangers, talk about small minded gimps.

    Gandalf.

    Ok Pencil,

The ashamed to be Irish is a bit strong, but i do agree with your sentaments. This booing is the very same as English hooligans racially abusing Colored players. And I agree that the FAI should try to do something. If you went to a Premiership ground and shouted racial abuse at some player you would be banned for life.

Will the spineless twats do something about it in the FAI, I think not.

    But the thing is -

A USA international from New Jersey, with ( we could guess from his name) Hispanic background and most probably Catholic background, was being booed by Irish so-called catholic supporters of a SCOTTISH football club, because he previously (Past Tense) played for another rival SCOTTISH club.

    F****** W******

Its time for the FAI to boot these idiots out

First of all if you didnt know the US No.10 then you dont know your football too well, Scottish or English.

And if you do know football then you know that fans, support their own team and not the opposition. Also there is a sizeable Celtic support at Ireland games so to expect a rangers or former rangers player not to be booed is a bit too much.
The IFA should make a public statement about this sad behaviour.

Secondly I doubt very much if the Irish Farmers Association will be saying too much on the subject.

Going by your (warped) logic, there would be alot of Man Utd. fans at the game. Shouldnt they have been booing Brad Friedal. He did after all play for Liverpool, MU arch rivals.

Wel I guess it's a bit much to expect dirty knackers not to boo a former Rangers player but as for real football fans...

I would love if Mick McCarthy or someone would make a request for the people who were booing not to come to the World Cup this summer, as scum like that make the whole country look bad. Those people were booing Reyna more than they were cheering Ireland on ffs. Absolute fupping morons.

I couldn't agree more Biffa (first time for everything I suppose) :) The fact that the guy is no longer a Rangers player just compounds the cretinousness of the booing.

For decades Ireland's supporters have been known for their good nature and having little or no hooligans (at least none you ever hear of). Now these knob-ends are spoiling that reputation. They should get a grip, and the FAI and/or Mick McCarthy should come out and condem this behaviour.

I agree with manonthemoon this is so absurdly stupid its unbelivable. Booing and slaging the oppisition is one thing but booing him because he god forbid played for a prodistant club. by there insane logic they should boo all manchester united and liverpool players too because they are also prodistant clubs. not that religion has anything to do with football

Does anyone know how we can get an offical comment from the FAI about this?

Maybe all the "Glasgow" Celtic fans should stay away from the Ireland games. If they want to act like that, they should do it in Scotland. Behaving like that in front of an Irish team is despicable.

I'd email them If I was me. But I'm too lazy. And if you wanna know what I know, then Yes. I felt ashamed. I thought our fans were some of the best in the World, remeber we won a "Best Fans" from UEFA for our Fans conduct during the France 98 Qualifying Campaign? Well then guess who's out of the running for this years "Best Fans"...

Yep, at the end of the day, it probably is sectarian. And thats bad. Although its sectarian in an Irish way isn't it? Slagging an American Catholic at the same club as a few Ireland internationals because he played for a British club.

Actually afaik Liverpool F.C. was founded by an Irish person, so it's not a Protestant club it's a Catholic club.

I was hoping that Reyna would score a rocket to shut those Yobbos up. He's a fantastic player and i wouldnt class anyone who boos at an Ireland game or Celtic game as fans. The same people probably couldnt kick a ball a foot..they certainly are not good catholic people and id say they dont even go to mass.If the FAI can identify any of them they should ban them from the ground for life and make an example of them. Im not a fan of Ken Bates but point he made seems to be true. If they act like animals they should be treated like animals. Im delighted that every sngle person that post on this forum are football fans and not fascist self opinionated yobs.:)

A football club is just that a football club but they can be strongly affiliated with other things eg religion.
    Stupid yea but it's true.

Ugh... what? I don't spend any time on the games boards. And whats stupid about my posts? I think you'll find that they are either facts or my own personal opinions.

My opinion on this issue is that the scumbags that are booing anyone on the field should be thrown out of the stadium immediately and should be warned once and once only.

I too was ashamed at the treatment doled out to Reyna but what got my goat up even more was during the minutes silence for the murdered Gardai there was this girl near to me on the South Terrace - she must have been all of 15 years old and, yes, the "proud" possessor of a Celtic jersey - who screamed "F uck the pigs" or words to that effect. Absolutely shameful considering that both members of the NYFD and NYPD were present to pick up a cheque kindly donated by the Irish players who waivered their fee for the night. Also shameful in that deep within all of us we know those little bastards that rammed the Garda car will undoubtedly get away with it.

In an era where there is considerable charitable goodness being displayed by members of the Irish team - The Quinn and Gary Kelly testimonials being a further two examples - it is saddening and verging on the humiliating to think that there are still mindless assholes out there who seem to think that "following" the Republic team equals making a statement about their "Irishness" and their hatred for "the Brits" and "the pigs".

We don't need that, and it is high time for the FAI to make a public statement about this kind of thing. The IFA were brave enough to do so in the wake of the Neil Lennon affair, so why haven't our Association done so? This is the second successive Irish match where sections of the fans have really let the country, themselves and the image of Ireland in the eyes of others down.

Email the FAI, and get all your friends to do likewise. info@fai.ie

On a lighter note, that new Irish away jersey isn't much of a looker is it? Bring back the Euro 88 shirt!

    B

Gentlemen, did you know that Mr Claudio Reyna lost family members on September 11 in the WTC inferno? I hope all you fellas who booed him just because it just so happens that he played for a FOOTBALL club that's percieved to be of a different "religion" (mind you, that's man-made, not God-created) are feeling very proud of yourselves.

No reply from the FAI yet...I won't hold my breath.

My sig is lyrics to a song. Its not like I made them up my self you know?

My name rules cos it tells people of what I usually do on the internet. I left out the Bulletin board thing because "PORNBULLETINBOARDNAPSTER" would sound a little silly. Don't you think?
