could anyone help me with a problem?

is there any way to take the last character from the end of a string in the bourne shell (sh) in shell scripting?

can i print out the string without the last character (ie. the string being say the output of another program)?
I'm on ly getting used to shell, difficult to get the head around

any help would be great thanks
