I saw that film "Chocolat" and I was drooling over the scenes where she made her own chocolate from grinding cocoa beans and adding bits and bobs. I love making stuff from scratch but can't for the life of me think where to get the first ingredient...

Anyone know where to buy cocoa beans??

Perhaps this is a bit more than you'd need?

    :D

Seriously though, pure cocao powder (not drinking chocolate!) is simply ground beans, as far as I'm aware. It seems very difficult to actually buy the beans in small quantities.

You could try growing the plants yourself too here, look for Theobroma cacao. Apparently they like low-light indoors conditions and plenty of water. Fairly easy to look after then.

thanx for the tips Kix, will try the cocoa powder as that first link led me to a bag of beans costing $34,000. I would have difficulty convincing the bank manager that they are "magic" beans, and anyway I don't have a cow to trade with...

    :)
