Don't know who to vote for? Try this site (commercial site with pop-ups) http://www.selectsmart.com/FREE/select.php?client=electireland in association with Electireland.com (http://www.electireland.com/). The site asks a series of questions and suggests a party. I don't know how honest it is. The result actually came close to the way I think (it wasn't perfect).

    My result:
Rank #1 equals your best match

    Your Results Page
    # 1 Fine Gael
    # 2 Progressive Democrats
    # 3 Green Party
    # 4 Fianna Fail
    # 5 Labour
    # 6 Sinn Fein
Make sure you weight the answers as to how strongly you think about them.

Nice one. It's no less crude than any other selection process I suppose, in fact it got me thinking about the issues a bit more which must be a good thing. My result was

    # 1 Green Party
    # 2 Labour
    # 3 Sinn Fein
    # 4 Fine Gael
    # 5 Fianna Fail
    # 6 Progressive Democrats

Which suits me just fine, except the placing of Sinn Fein troubles me. I like the way they're engaging with some of the same disenfranchised people that the bigger parties couldn't care less about, but I'm less keen on their supporting-various-types-of-crime policy.

Hmmm very interesting. It is very close to the way I am leaning towards voting.
    # 1 Green Party
    # 2 Labour
    # 3 Progressive Democrats
    # 4 Fine Gael
    # 5 Sinn Fein
    # 6 Fianna Fail

I think that the big swingto Sinn Fein might be a different shade of Green in this election.

    Gandalf.

actually, this will be my first time to vote in an election, so i had no idea who to vote for, but what i found most telling was the positions the various parties took on the abortion referendum-
so i'm wondering what, if any, big events have influenced your choice?

Voting an the basis of politica parties is completey and utterly wrong. You should vote for the candidate in your constituancy that is goning to do the most for you during the term in office. Thats what Proportional Repersintation is about! Voting by party line is b*llsh*t

    Greens
    Labour
    Sinn Fein
    Fine Gael
    Fianna Fail
    Progressive Democrats

Funny thing is.......I had to do the test and then stick my own preference at the top:

    # 1 Socialist Party
    # 2 Green Party
    # 3 Labour
    # 4 Sinn Fein
    # 5 Fine Gael
    # 6 Fianna Fail
    # 7 Progressive Democrats

I guess the webmaster must be under the mistaken impression that the greens, labour and the shinners are left wing parties.

The test was right about the way i would like to vote however

The green party never vote after an election so why should i vote for them

Labour would only go into goverment with FG

As for the questions like did you think that Haughey was a good Leader I said yes however he did alot of bad thinks which he cant be forgiven for just because he also did alot of good things for this country, (You have to take the good and the bad with haughey), i dont think it is an election issue.

I answered jobs over environment how Am i voting green so.

The Eircom thing Sorry folks but if you bought into eircom you still should have some money left thus it is not like a horse race, when you bet on a horse you loss all your money, your lucky you didn't go to the bookies.

Close enough for me. I'd swap the Fine Gael and Fianna Fail positions, while Sinn Fein wouldn't appear within a million miles of the list.

Although I have to admit I didn't fully understand some of the issues (e.g. PRSI? The Public Sector pay bill?). Then again, I'm not allowed to vote, so you needent worry about me.

Is there a quick-and-dirty summary of the different parties positions on major issues/philosophies? (I mean, other than the information on their respective web sites, which isn't directly comparable).
