theory behind DNS

before I go off googling I thought I'd ask here first.

Ok as part of my quest to become a (possibly bearded) unix admin I'm trying to figure out how the whole DNS system works :)

My understanding so far is that if I want to register sisob.com I go to a registrar and register the domain name and the 2 dns servers that will control the domain. It's these two servers that control the IP associated with the domain, right?

Ok so now I have sisob.com and I can choose the ip of the computer that will be contacted if someone contacts sisob.com - but how do I configure the IP's of the machines that are contacted when someone tries to contact www.sisob.com or biggiantmongoose.sisob.com ?

Do i set up my own dns server to control the members of the sisob.com domain?

you can get this done by your remote dns server's.
there's no need for a website to have a dedicated dns server

and who runs these DNS servers ? is it the registrar or would I have to go pay someone to host the dns for my sisob.com domain?

and who runs these DNS servers ?

The people who run DNS servers. :) Most of the time, the people that host the website for you will host your DNS too. Some people choose to run their own DNS. Others choose companies like EsayDNS to host it for them.

Some of the Registrars provide dns hosting too.

But i recommend www.zoneedit.com. it is a great service and allows 5 domains for each free account. but u can have unlimited sub domains etc.
<flamey@dust> [~] $ host -a dahomelands.net
Trying null domain
rcode = 0 (Success), ancount=2
The following answer is not authoritative:
The following answer is not verified as authentic by the server:
dahomelands.net 172800 IN NS NS3.ZONEEDIT.COM
dahomelands.net 172800 IN NS NS4.ZONEEDIT.COM

this shows that my domain has the NS servers 3 and 4 from zoneedit.com ok.
<flamey@dust> [~] $ host dahomelands.net
dahomelands.net has address 66.70.14.72
dahomelands.net mail is handled (pri=5) by annemccaffrey.org
dahomelands.net mail is handled (pri=0) by newjack.dahomelands.net

this shows my host ip and mail servers.

one more thing u can see, are the subdomains.
<flamey@dust> [~] $ host -l dahomelands.net
dahomelands.net name server ns3.zoneedit.com
dahomelands.net name server ns4.zoneedit.com
dahomelands.net has address 66.70.14.72
dahomelands.net domain name pointer 72.14.70.66.in-addr.arpa
mrtg.dahomelands.net has address 12.222.2.102
errorcom.dahomelands.net has address 12.222.2.102
webmail.dahomelands.net has address 12.222.2.102
newjack.dahomelands.net has address 12.222.2.102
eircom.dahomelands.net has address 12.222.2.102
www.dahomelands.net has address 66.70.14.72
ns.dahomelands.net has address 66.70.14.70

so you can see from that, that my mail site dahomelands.net (alias www.dahomelands.net) point to 66.70.14.72

and the sub domains point elsewhere.

Regards,

Paul
