As reported on football365. Shame for Arsenal & France, given his form lately, and that a player in his prime will miss the World Cup this summer.

Yep its a crying shame that Pires who has had the best season of his career (so the tele pundits say) will be sitting out the WC. France will miss him as the Gunners will for the remainder of the season.

I don't think anyone no matter who they support like to see a gifted player carried off the field like that.

our best player of the season by far but i think Arsenal will still win the league. Edu can fill his position and he too is showing a lot of promise. i feel sorry for Pires over the world cup. France have a fantastic chance of winning it again and if they do he will miss out on a winners medal. Sky Sports News tonight said he may be out for a year  because of severely damaged cruciate ligaments  . and all he did was land awkwardly. talk about unlucky

Yeh, all i could think watching him being carried off was "hope its not his cruciate".... bugger.

On the bright side, hes a shoo-in for player of the year now:)

A true honour to see an athlete and footballer of Pires quality and mentality play for Arsenal at long last. A tragedy that this man could miss the world cup where he was crtainly set to shine. English football has certainly brought the best out in Mr Pires and i wish him the best of luck in making a speedy recovery.Mr Overmars you aint fit to clean his boots...No wonder you got out in a hurry. there was no chance of you playing whilst the amazing Pires was strutting his stuff on highbury soil.Get well soon rob..:)

A true Gunner does not slag off a player that great service to the club like Marc Overmars. He are Pires are 2 different players.

Overmars is the type of player that instilled pure fear in any defender he was running at.

Listen Gandalf you cheeky ****ing ****..Dont you dare doubt my commitment to arsenal fc.Its time you got a history lesson. Overmars is a left winger as is Pires!!! Makes them equally competable in my books!!! If you'd dare remember whilst Overmars was a terror for all full backs to handle that he had more hitches and faults to his game than Pires. Overmars sometimes overplayed the ball and like a greedy **** he sometimes went for an angled shot rather than cross the ball("what he was ****ing paid primarily to do as a winger") And your full-back can forget about him coming back helping him out when pressure is mounting down the wing.. Pires has better attacking aspects to his game as well as the required defensive technique and even when it looks like he's lost the ball our robert never gives up and will fight for it no matter what. So there is why i do not miss the little dutchman because we have a left winger whom is an all round better player and rarely fails to rate lower than a 9 in his games this season.. pace aint everything practically and Pires has a yard of pace in his mind ahead of the bunch.+ had Overmars stayed at Arsenal he would have been keeping the bench warm sooner or later.

Pires has only been strutting his stuff lately against the dregs of the premier league. Where was he against Deportivo and Juventus when it really counted. Overmars was great against the good sides, as is Bergkamp for that matter.
Its funny, but when I watched Pires against Juventus and the way that he jumped over tackles to avoid getting stuck in, I said to myself that he'll get hurt one day doing that. If he had a bit more balls then he would be be fine and not in this mess.

Ah ****e go on out of that and stop bluffing. You wouldnt even see Overmars near a challenge never mind jump one and as for being better in europe well him and emmanuel Petit sure did prove that with their somewhat "crap display" against galatasary in the uefa cup final '00. Pires has been fantastic all year all round against depor and what proved to be a meaningless juve game. His goal vs Leverkusen was just superb.. Without a doubt even poxy united fans think hes player of the year..Bergkamp no doubt of his genius.. Just ask him who he prefers playing with. doesnt saturdays newcastle game give you a clue????????

Look you, you say your an Arsenal fan but you slag off a player who delivered for the club. Heres a history lesson for you, you cheeky fuk, I have supported Arsenal for 21 years.

Theres no doubt that Pires is an excellent player and this year he has delivered, but last year he was ordinary.

Also remember had Overmars stayed at Arsenal they wouldn't have gotten 24.5 Million for him (The other 0.5 was for Petit :)). Also was it wrong for him to want to play for Barcelona, man if I could play football or was any way skillful I'd want to play there.....(plus get the wads)

Calm down and stop slagging the players that have done the business for Arsenal in the past, thats if your a true fan of course (stir, stir, stir).

    Gandalf.

After seeing France's destruction of the poor auld Scot's I don't think they'll miss Pires at all this summer but its a shame to see him miss such a big event. Any news on how long he's out for?

The difference gandalf is that i have supported arsenal before i knew how to play football. What is your definition of "Great Service to the club"??? Saying Marc Overmars is a great servant to Arsenal FC is like saying Hugh Hefner is a devoted husband to his wife for 50 years.Whereas the one whom you disrespectively called "The donkey" ina reply to another string has being with us since he was a kid. He could of well fukd off back in the disastrous blight of 95 and got his big payday from man utd or the ac-milans whom had the utmost admiration for his leadership but unlike mr overmars and monsiuer Petit he saw potential in the club.Barcelona was pretty quick in ditching manu..Overmars has being dropped often this year and rumours are pool might be interested .petits and overmars only salvation in my good books is that they didnt leave in the same fashion as nic "the prik" anelka.

Overmars was and is, a fantastic player. As a life-long supporter of the Gunners, I cannot countenance anyone calling him a sellout or a poor player for that matter. If not for his genius, we wouldn't have won the double in the style that we did- his peformance + goal versus Man U at Old Trafford was among the best I have ever seen from an Arsenal player ever. The only other player who did himself truly proud in that match was Alex Manninger with a string of fine saves(ahh, memories). Granted, Arsenal did easily as much good to Overmars as Overmars did for Arsenal (taking him after a bad injury, adding a dimension to his game by cutting in etc)- but that's no reason to demean a staunch servant of the club. The only thing more petty perhaps sir, would be for you to say Sol Campbell isn't fit to wear an Arsenal jersey because he used to be a Spud. Well, let's try and see past that- Armstrong, Venables, Grosse and Hoddle all nurtured his talent as a defender, and we are now reaping the benefits.

And I agree 100% with Gandalf- if any footballer is offered a chance to shine at Barcelona, especially when (at the time) Van Gaal was keen on transferring most of the Dutch national squad there, I think few can blame Overmars for joining them. It is however ironic, that players who have left Wenger's Arsenal have generally never again played as well as they did under his stewardship, says something about his ability to motivate players, something they no doubt miss.

Don't get me wrong, I think Pires should really be voted player of the year for his outstanding play this season, but the two players are very different in style, no matter what you say. Overmars is the classic winger- your point about defensive work-rate is rather irrelevant if you're talking about this particular romantic relic of football. Jimmy Johnstone, Jairzhino, Garrincha and other classic wingers- all had one thing in common- their defensive output was close to nil. Their job was to be blindingly fast, skillful, hug the touchline, chalk their boots, and deliver crosses. Overmars was all that- and had the added dimension of cutting inside and pelting the goal- as a player he was worth roughly 16 goals a season to us. Pires is very much the modern left-sided midfield player, assisting in defence, and with a floating free role in attack- be it in the center of the park threading balls through defences, or trying to trick fullbacks out on the wing. You will never catch him on the shoulder of the last defender chasing a ball over the top, more likely he will dig it out of defence and put said ball over the top. That's where Overmars shone- he'd be right on the shoulder of the last defender, get the ball to feet, turn him superbly and then sprint through on goal- Pires prefers to create a lot more a la Zizou.

Both great players, but the difference is there if you are willing to spot it. Another thing- Overmars served Arsenal for longer than Pires currently has done- perhaps you should wait a few months before making such a hasty retrospective judgement? After all, for all we know Pires might try a move to Barca at the end of the season :p Anything's possible in the transfer market these days.
