These three Nations received almost all of the total us foriegn military funding worldwide for 2002 and over half of the US ecconomic support fund.
The Only other significant benificary was columbia under the provision for International Narcotics and law enforcement ($217,000,000)

US Foreign Military Financing for Financial year 2002

    total $3,650,000,000.
    Israel $2,040,000,000
    Egypt $1,300,000,000
    Jordan $75,000,000

US Ecconomic Support Fund for financial year 2002
    total $2,199,000,000
    Israel $720,000,000
    Egypt $655,000,000
    Jordan $150,000,000

It kind of highlights the limitations of the argument that Israel cannot make peace with the palestinians because it is surrounded by hostile nieghbours intent on its destruction.
If Eygpt and Jordan are so beligerent why is America providing Eygpt with 52 Advanced sea to surface Harpoon Block II missiles capable of striking 60miles inland and avoiding anti missile defences?

Anyway, heres the reveiw from the nice people from Fas.Enjoy

its mainly because arms trade is BIG business.

in order to make up for the lack of sales from domestic and traditional markets for millitary equipment, new markets are being created. this is vital for arms corporations and contractors in order to stay afloat.

motherjones has a whole section devoted to arms trade called Arms Around the World.

Egypt gets it for a number of reasons.

However they had it on the news the other day that people in the Egyptian government are seriously considering to tell the US to go fuk itself and it's money.

They realise that it's helped the country but a lot of the businesses are US owned and it's pretty much turned Egypt into the US's bitch. The US enforces it's policies via it's companies abroad.

I'll believe that when I see it. You really think they'll consider halting the suplly of $655m in economic aid or $1.3 billion in military aid. For what? The palestinaians? Like all Arab states, the Egyptians will look after themselves.

From time spent in Egypt, it was pretty obvious that the vast majority of Egyptians don't give a toss whether big US business is in their country - they realise (like the vast majority do in Ireland) that they bring in wealth, jobs and economic prosperity. They only people moaning are (in Ireland) the hard left and (in Egypt) the religious fundamentalists such as the Muslim Brotherhood (responsible for the 1996 Luxor massacre).

Naturally, you'll respond that the US repartriate their profits. Doesn't matter, it's still better than the alternative of the dole queue in Ireland or the begging bowl in Egypt.
