I've a 500MHZ machine but I think the motherboard has a very slow bus speed because nothing I do seems to improve the fact that DVD's won't play smoothly for me. I tried a few different players before and some were better than other's but none really a chieved a watchable quality.

Apart from getting one of those dedicated decoder cards is there any tips anyone has for improving the efficieny?

What players have you found to be the most efficient?

For speed, use windvd or cinemaster. Cinemaster consists of a decoding engine and a front end, the front end is normally distributed by graphics card manufacturers etc. You should have no trouble finding them with a quick google search. For speed, stay away from powerdvd.

you may also want to get a program called dvdgenie, apart from letting you change the region of a software decoder (not a locked drive) it will let you enable various options in cinemaster to use any dvd accelerations features your graphics card may have.
