AFAIK windoze insists on being the primary partition as it assumes that you wont be using any other O/S (not arrogant at all, those M$ boys eh? )

Install Windows first WWM. Red Hat is used to being the underdog, and has no problem with it. Windows, on the other hand, gets stroppy. :)

<edit> you turn away for a few* minutes and loads of ppl post :D </edit>

    * - lots

Its easiest to just departition the drive completely.

Install win2k, tell it how big you want the partition to be during the install process and install away.

Then after thats all happy, install linux, let it set up the partitions for linux during the install procedure and let it install a bootmanager on the mbr (master boot record) of the harddrive. (grub is working fine for me at the moment - the install should give you a choice of which to use, grub or lilo).

So once youve set up your main linux partition(s) and the swap partition itll do the business, reboot the machine and you should have a prompt or menu allowing you to specify which partition you want to boot from.

If you do end up over writing the mbr for any reason you can fix it easily enough with a linux bootdisk so theres not a whole lot to worry about.

Wildly Lemming. I ran around the block three times.

It's more fun if you break both WWM. Black screens are cool. :)

Yes, don't install it. 6.2 was a lovely stable release, but so's 7.2, and 6.2 will be wildly out of date now. It's not as if you can't have 7.2 in a couple days.

actually, if i wanted i could have red hat in the space of about 30 minutes. its just that i have the release cd of 6.2 and i couldnt be arsed to d/l it.
so, now im busy trying to figure it all out.
i can log into linux,a nd hey, i get a nice screen with windows and guis and stuff like that. im not too worried about using it at all, im a windoze person not a unix head, but i have been asked to put it on.
    so....
i boot and it goes into linux.
um, why wont it go into win2k?

why doesnt it even give me the option of it?
i have checked fdsik and it tells me theres a nice 4 gig partition with ntfs on it. and then it says theres another unspecified partition, i assume it to be linux.

um, how do i get it to give me the option of either?

oh, and one other thing, how do i change the screen resolution? i managed to get a virtual screen like my old ati card. thats was fun, took me about 2 minutes to figure out my desktop had gone to 8 time the size of the monitor :)

Did you install Lilo or Grub during the install?

    Take a look here... http://octoped.net/linux/lilo-cfg.html

    LILO Usage
At boot time, LILO will present you with a boring prompt:

    LILO:

If you do nothing, LILO will wait the amount of time specified in its configuration file and then boot the default operating system image. You can choose an operating system image to boot by typing its label here. If you can't remember what the labels are, press the TAB key to see a list. The default image is normally labelled "linux". If your lilo.conf was built by the Linux setup program, you may also have one called "dos" that boots the DOS or Windows partition.

If you need to pass special parameters to the Linux kernel, you can do it by typing them after the image name. For example, if you need to logon to Linux in single-user mode to repair a damaged system (or because you forgot the root password), you can type:

    linux single

    Or if that fails, try:

    linux 1

See the BootPrompt How-To for more neat things you can do at the LILO: prompt

nice one, this looks like the ticket.
and of course i didnt look at anything i was installing.
    im a wndows person :)
if it goes wrong, you just re-install :)

on second thoughts, pressing the tab button gives me a linux option only.
    wheres meh windoze gone?

Did you check the lilo config file? If it's not in there try adding it. Did you install Win2K in NTFS?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 16,659 ✭✭✭✭dahamsta

um, why wont it go into win2k?

Stating the obvious, but it should to. You should have been able to check a few options in the install process, i.e. what's bootable and what's default. I don't know about LILO that far back though. :)

oh, and one other thing, how do i change the screen resolution?

Again, this is configurable during the install process, and it's a pain in the arse /after/ the install process. However, su to root and type: Xconfigurator. Now figure it out. :)

    Boot linux.

    Open a terminal and type

    su
    give your root password
then type pico [or other editor]/etc/lilo.conf

in your lilo config file go right to the end and type

    other=/dev/hda1
    label=windoze
    table=/dev/hda
then save off this file and exit the editor

    still as root type
    lilo
    if that erros out type
lilo -v and post the error message
    /or something\

hmm, ok this is going to take a little while to work out.
im just trying to get into this whole loading at the moment, but it appears the problem is with me not selecting certain partitions ro creating certain partitions so its not giving me the whole lilo loader option.
i am reinstalling and mucking about so when i figure out what im doing wrong, i'll let you know :)

Hey Typedef, when you read threads like this, d'ya ever wish you were /there/, so you could just go: "Look, click, click, click, see? Now, where's my caffeine?" :)

hmm, ok. fresh mind in the morning!
right, so far ive discovered that i dont understand a thing about linux.
so, the problem appears to be that i cant seem to get it to choose the linux partition and the win2k partition (which it says is hpfs for some reason).
i choose my main linux partition as the / drive (i presume this is root?) and it automatically makes a swap drive, but it then gives me a 23 mg linux partition drive and a 4 gig hpfs drive which i cannot allocate a /boot or /home or whatever any of this means.
so on the next page it wont allow me to choose either of these as options to add to the liio boot yoke and hence it doesnt come up at boot up.
    know what i mean?

    coz i dont :)

    WWM
    Arrange your partitioning scheme thusly.

    [windows ][linux root ][swap]

Now it won't matter if Red Hat only allocated a linux line in lilo ok, all you have do do once it is finished the install is add the windows partition to the lilo.conf file like I detailed for you above ok.

Linux might not be able to mount the 2k partition with the version of the kernel you are running.
So once you have installed linux test this out.
    Type
modprobe ntfs - if this loads then type
    mkdir /windoze
    mount -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /windoze
    or something similar
else if you don't have support for ntfs on whichever version of linux Red Hat 6.2 runs you may have to get a 2.4.x kernel from http://ftp.kernel.org

/tiiime is on my side... yes it is ... \

don't want to nit-pick but the swap should be as close to the start as possible - the start or the drive is the fastest AFAIK
