I'm not a DVD expert so I could be wrong but I think this player kicks @ss. It's what I've been looking for for ages, I wanted the Scan one which has similar features but with all the bad reports about scan as a company I never bothered getting it. This one is even cheaper than the Scan one which works out at around 200 quid Irish after shipping and all that. The Minoka works out at 121 quid Irish and you can pick it up in Power City, how can you go wrong!!?

I've been messin around burning all sorts of VCD's in different formats, pictures, video clips, picture indexes, menus and all sorts of stuff and this player never had a problem with any of them. A mate of mine bought some expensive player for like 250 quid and even though it's supposed to read VCD's it had problems with most of the stuff I burnt. You can even browse through directories for your MP3's, pictures and mpegs etc. And they can be all mixed on the same CD without having to worry about compatibility issues of the different modes.

Theres little or no info on the web about this player, it probably comes under a different name or something from Japan, or maybe it's just too new. So I can't get any info about unlocking to region free and gettin rid of the Macro on it but they told me in Power City that they'll unlock the region for 30 Euro and the macro for another 10 Euro. I don't know if the 'techie' in there just types in a code or if they actually have to chip it, I can't see it being that difficult, I've programmed and chipped playstations before myself but I just can't seem to find any info on this player. Anyway I'm not in a hurry so I'll leave it for now. If anyone else has any info I'd be glad to hear it.

Anyway heres the main features of this baby:

    DVD/SVCD/VCD2.0/VCD3.0/MP3/CD/CD-R/CD-RW/CVD/DVCD/OKO

i got my cheap ass dvd player (cyberhome ad-l528) from richer sounds just before christmas.. IR£130 at the time.

region-free, plays any disc i've thrown at it, mp3/vcd/xvcd/dvcd/etc., optical and coax dig. out, analog 5.1 out, analog stereo out, scart out (obviously), s-video out and rather strangely YUV out (which i cant imagine anyone ever using).

best thing is you can download the firmware and update it with a cdr, that and theres a good community of nutters on the web who have the player and have come up with a variety of hardware additions/hacks/cooling aids/improvements..

that said i reckon i'll still be upgrading to a marantz 4100ose (€500) pretty soon, as i want a decent quality cd player, the above was just a starter player :)

    Denon and marantz are merging:

Apparently big demand for the Marantz sr range of av receiver caused them to decide to put up the prices from last week :(

This news is probably going to mean higher prices too as both make great hi-fi products :(

    Hi Blade,

Apparently the Minoka 535 is made by Daewoo their model number is DVG-3000N.

The good news is there is a region hack for this player and also an option to turn off macrovision, have a look here...

    Region Hack

Lets know how you get on.;)

BNC: Nice one! Seems to work, I got into the hidden menu and set it to byepass, tho for some reason they recommend to leave it to region 1 if your playing region 1 DVD's. I'm gonna try flashing the firmware cause they say the macro doesn't work even tho it's listed in the menu, if that goes wrong I'll prolly need to replace the chip inside :/ Wish me luck that I don't have a powercut in the middle of it! I can't test that the region thing works yet tho cause I've no foreign DVD's.

Anyway BNC how the hell did you know that it was a Daewoo firmware in it????? Just curious cause I searched for Minoka and couldn't find a damn thing on it?

    I owe you! Thanks,
    Blade

To think that Power City wanted 40 Euro off me for their 'techie' to press:

    SETUP
    Stop
    Track Back |<<
    Track Forward >>|

on the remote kinda pisses me off. I'm going to say it to 'Steven' next time I go in there. He shouldn't have given me his name. Unless someone in there was kind enough to give you this information on the player BNC? In which case I wouldn't want to cause any trouble.

Glad it worked for you.:) No I don't have a problem if you want to have a go at 'Steven'.

I managed to get hold of one on my travels and had a look at it. I have some mates in the electronics game (who shall remain nameless;)) who gave me the info.

I think its fairly $hitty for Power City to charge for this, so I was just sharing some info.

Cheques & Postal orders can be made out to BNC :D

Which power city did you get it from? Do they still have them?

    Thanks
