Know any bands that play music like Sneaker Pimps/Massive Attack? That kinda downbeat, bass-heavy kinda stuff?

    One word: Portishead.

Much better than massive attack, which are simply overrated in my opinion (the singer from Portishead does the vocals on "Teardrop" by the way)

After that... Purple Penguin do kinda instrumental beats along the lines of massive attack / sneaker pimps stuff. I'd check out Portishead definatly though.

Beth Gibbons is the vocalist for Portishead , Liz Fraser from the band The Cocteau Twins did the vocals on Massive Attacks Teardrop

Oh, you are in fact right, yellum.. hmm, i remember seeing somewhere that Beth did the vocals for it, but anyways..

Their vocal styles could be seen as being similiar maybe, I think Liz has a nicer voice though.

Mmm.. Difficult choice, that, but I really haven't heard enough of Liz's stuff, so I have to go with Beth. I don't like her singing style on the album "Portishead" much, but on "Dummy".. it's sublime.

Haven't portishead now broken up :( if so it's such a pity. Two albums isn't enough, I'm considering buying that DVD of them playing live in New York saw it before it's really cool.

I'll probably be shouted down, but some of Tricky's stuff is very Massive Attack'ish... Try Maxinquaye...

Massive Attack's new album is also due out in a couple of months..
and I read somewhere that their first collaboration with Mos Def, will be available from their website soon (update: March 11th).

Check out the "Science Fiction Jazz" compilations on the Mole Listening Pearls label. Also, anything on Cup of Tea records.

Mono, as in "Life In Mono" ("The stranger sang a theme/ From someone else's dream..." etc., used in some car ad or other) showed promise in this area, but never came to much. That's still a great track though.

    in order of "pop"ness...

gus gus - polydistortion something similar to the two you mentioned.. deepish bass and drifty vocals, if you like those you'll like this.. real pop-ish bass stuff, not quite my cup of tea tho.

    any st. etienne album.

as already mentioned .. tricky - maxinquaye.. don't bother with any other tricky album (even if i did waste money on them all), none are half as good as this.. and its so much better than any massive attack offering.

bjork - homogenic.. unless you don't like bjork, and for gods sake why not? and even if you do hate her, this should change your mind...

boards of canada. enough said. just get music has the right to children before geogaddi (the new release)..

    Buys Lamb's single "Gorecki".
I wouldn't be keen on a lot of their other stuff, but that track was spot on....

check out Mathew Herberts last album, Bodily functions.
Some seriously good vocals and lots of the percussion is him sampling his baby daughter making baby sounds (a lot better than this sounds, trust me)
Incidently, Herbert does has a great remix featured on Cornelius' Drop single. Check it out

Check out My Dying Bride circa 34.788% Complete.

T'was very much along the same lines as Portishead, but darker.
They even done a cover of "Roads" and it was just downright scary how much Aaron Stainthorpe sounded like the singer from Portishead.

Switchblade Symphony's first album Serpentine Gallery is also well worth checking out. That's pretty Goth though.

    * Edit:

Download the songs Heroin Chic and Base Level Erotica by My Dying Bride to see what I'm on about.
Base Level is a bit more guitar driven though, in case that's not your thing.

Well I'd have to if I'm going to fly over to London to see 'em.
And then see 'em again in Ireland...
    Then again in Germany...
