Wondering if anyone in here or out there can tell me if:

    a) it's possible to take advantage of this connection speed and simply sit my laptop down beside a computer and stick the phoneline into it. Any obvious problems?

    b) Can programs like aimster/napster run properly in here. I've got 'em running off zipdisk but will firewalls, etc. get in the way?

    Cheers.

    Boredom ya'know?:o

    a) you don't know about networking do ya... answers not a hope in hell

b)firewall will get in the way even if you were running them off your own laptop.

Explaination, to make use of this speed you would need to connect your laptop to the network. to do this you'd need and network card (not phone line) and of course permission. If they did allow it your still logging into their server so all secuirty issues are still there, ie. login restrictions, firewall etc.

The connection speeds here at this time of night are brilliant though.

2.5 MB in 3 seconds on Friday night!!

Talk to computing services, they may assign you an IP or a DHCP server that you can use - after all, the commerce people will have to have some system in place for next September. Nothing will get through that firewall. Even p2p apps with firewall using options are refused :(

Get some skillz - go and learn about networking, before you try to plug your laptop into the 'phoneline' as you put it.

    :)

(And yes the off peak speeds are unbelievable. 1.5mbits at 7pm !!!!!)

ATM there are no student access points for laptops in Belfield- as seamus said they will be avaiable in the quinn school in sept. so if your doing commerce you'll be sorted:)

Its a crying shame BTW, cos I just bought a laptop:( They're are docking stations all over Blackrock-GSB- in the coffee shop even !!

Bri I think what seamus is trying to say dont just stick things into any random holes and hope for the best;)

Try www.http-tunnel.com it will get you past the firewall but unless you pay $5 for a subscription the download speeds are slow (1-5k/s) if you pay $5 you can get up to 100kbs/s.
