Ladyfest London 2002

A girl I work with is helping to organise this, and I'd like to get an Irish contigent over - any female artists/ photographers out there who fancy a trip to London? Expenses not paid as it's not-for-profit, but I can guarantee some sofa/floor space:

LADYFEST LONDON are looking for female musicians, DJs, performers, artists, film makers etc to take part in the Ladyfest London festival in August 2002 at the Garage - Highbury & Islington, the Oak Bar - N16 and other venues to be confirmed.

We are also looking for people who would like to get involved in the series of fundraising benefits in the run up to the festival.

Ladyfest London is a festival intended to celebrate, encourage and raise the profile of women in all aspects of the Arts. Although it has risen out of the ashes of the Riot Grrl movement in the early 1990s, Ladyfest is not just about girls in stripey tights singing shouty songs (although there will be plenty of that about no doubt!) ... our aim is to represent as many forms of performance and art as possible, and as many musical genres as possible.

The festival is a charity event, all money raised will be put back into women's arts charities. As such, money may be short and we ask performers to keep this in mind when requesting fees.

If you interested in taking part or would like more information, please e-mail ---

I know your saying its for charity and all,

Well, you could argue that they often don't get as much recognition for their work, esp. in fine art. But I'm not going to bother.

    Previously yes. Today, that's bunk.

That's partly why I wasn't going to bother arguing - I don't know enough about the art world to monitor how well women are represented tehse days, but even an occasional exhibition-attender like me can tell that we probably have it better than we've ever had before.

Still, there's no harm in encouraging up-and-coming women, especially in a multi-media event like this - I do know enough about music to assert that female musicians (as opposed to singers) are still a bit marginalised.

Basically, I just want to show off to the English chicks how cool and talented irish ladeez are.

I think that women are still a little in the shadows of men in the art world and alot in the shadows of men in the multimedia world.

Sounds like a sound idea to me. I know very few women involved in multimedia in Ireland but hey... i'm working in Derry so I know very few people involved in multimedia full stop.

Good luck with it anyway girls. Show off your mad skillz for us all back in Ireland!
