i think Best Supporting Actor is the biggest Oscar FoTR can win.
Mulholland Drive will probably win Best Director and A Beautiful mind will win Best Picture

Naaaah. Beautiful Mind will get Best Supporting Actress. Maybe best actor. As long as Denzel Washington and Wil Smith don't win I don't mind who wins that, heh.

Sure Ian McKellen might get best supporting actor. A few for best set, effects, et al. Films like these always get awards like that (think Gladiator).

    Best screenplaye - Memento. Absolutely.

Hope LOTR picks up some. Here's hoping Harry Potter gets nothing ;)

I hope LOTR does well but then the best films or more to the point those that deserve to win often dont. And in order for LOTR to win the judges need to understand it. If they have no idea what its all about then it wont win anything unfortunatly.. at least it was nominated

I hope to **** it gets every one of them.

    It deserves em all.

and oh look Harry's only up for 3 and what's that none of them to do with the storyline or characters, well now isn't that a surprise.

There's a couple that LOTR is nominated for that I hope it doesnt get....

    There would be :

Best Art Direction / Set Direction
    Best cinematography
    Best Sound

Why? Cause its up against Amelie in all three categories, which I think was a better movie :)

As for Best Actor - I reckon Smith or Washington will take it. Not because they necessarily deserve it, but because the Oscars are too politically focussed, and two black nominations is a rarity. I reckon itll be another case of a close decision, ultimately decided by political reasoning rather than merit.

I think we need a boards.ie award to be given to : "Worst September 11 reference in an Oscar-acceptance speech", cause I reckon *this* will be the real unpredicatble category :)

Did not see Amelie so cant comment against it but:
Best Art Direction / Set Direction
    Best cinematography
    Best Sound ...

Funny these are what i would have thought most likely for it to win! Love the soundtrack and the sounds the the movie itsef are perfect! I thought it had great sets and the Cinematography also was superb.. so is Amelie actually so much better?
