Well, no actually they are not the same

The Athlon 1GHz has no onboard L2 cache. The 512Kb L2 cache sits on the daughtercard with the chip. However the L2 cahce runs at a fraction of the Core Processor speed - AMD used ****e memory so its only 300MHz or so I believe

The Athlon Thunderbird 1GHz has 256kb on ONBOARD L2 Cache similar to the Intel Pentium IIIe (Coppermine). This memory, as with the Intel chip, runs at the core speed so you get 1GHz L2 fun

AMD Athlon cpus are not AMD Thunderbirds but I think what's on itdirect are thunderbirds. Many places lists thundersbirds as AMD Athlons and the prices looks about right for the thunderbird (Marx is overcharging if that's only for the cpu) and the itdirect site also has 1.2gig amd athlon listed, as far as I know, only the thunderbird does 1.2gig. Just call them up if you want to be sure.

IR£264.99 is a good price but the 1gig thunderbird from places like www.scan.co.uk is only around 170 sterling. Plus 30 delivery and current exchange rate of 0.79257, you're looking at around 250 irish. You can order with mates and split deliverys for further saving or order from somewhere like www.dabs.com which offers free delivery to UK so you can send it off to relatives or friends in the UK and ask them to send it to yas smile.gif

Above CPU is socket A. IIRC only the Thunderbird and Duron where produced for socket A. The original Athlon was SlotA.

    See
    http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/athlon/faq.html

Q1:What happened to the Thunderbird processors? Are these AMD Athlon™ processors the processors formerly code-named Thunderbird?

A1:Thunderbird is the AMD internal code name for the new AMD Athlon processor with performance enhancing cache memory.
