I have a new mobo (ECS Elitegroup K7S5A) and a new Athlon XP 1800+. The machine won't post for me. The power comes on, the fans whirl and the drives purr. The screen stays black, and blank. The CPU isn't damaged, I've changed the RAM, the 3d Card and what not, no use. I've heard I might need to f;ash the bios first with a diff cpu in order for it to take my XP, but as far as I can see they ship XP ready.

    What PSU have you got?

the post has nothing to do with the OS, whether its xp, 2k, 9x or *nix.

i am presuming when you say it doesnt post that you get no beeps?

there are 3 things why your system wont post.
    ram, cpu or motherboard.
you may have to troubleshoot each to find out which is the culprit....

I was of the impression that if you use a below spec PSU, you may also have problems, no?

Ah.. When he said XP I think that he meant his Athlon XP. Other possibililies could be the fan on the CPU not working ? ie The machine may not start without an active fan. Try clearing the CMOS and testing a mates chip in the board.

ah true, but if a fan is the problem, then its a part of the system board..

well, id be surprised if he hasnt stripped it down to the bare componants to see if theres a short somewhere.
anyway, whats wrong with our advice?
    bloody tantrum throwing athlon owners.
i suppose he'll be putting unix on it next.

I can't think of very much without having the machine in front of me, I hearby offer to fix the machine for a small fee, and if it's faulty, no charge.

    Small things to try:

take the board out of the case, and run it on the motherboard box. Check the position of the cmos jumper. Try clearing the cmos. Check the position of any other jumpers.

I've changed the RAM, vid card etc. still no use. I'm pretty sure it's a dodgy mobo. I don't have ANY (!) friends who are interested in pcs really, and the few that do own computers are pentium people(!). I have a codegen 300 W PSU, for what its worth.

Woe is me, I never knew what pc trouble was til these last few weeks :-/
