    for anyone interested, i was in touch with the printers of the t-shirts and mugs about specifications for supplying images for printing and this was their responce:

    72dpi is a minimum, The printers print out the transfer at what ever dpi
    you save it at. The point is that cotton is not like paper, it is textured
    and can not reproduce the same quality as say paper.

    As above. Mugs give a higher quality of image even though they are smaller

    This is a complex area. Different printers use different transfers and
    different colour systems. We would like to be able to dictate to our
    printers which system to use, however we are not yet in a position to do so.
    As volums increase we will be better able to nail down areas like this. We
    are trying to get all our printers to agree to doing colour t-shirts at
    present. It is a bit of a chicken and egg situation.
