    1. Mandrake Linux will once again amaze the Linux world with quality software and easier installation.
    2. Corel Linux will be just a memory.
    3. Red Hat will finally get past the 1024 cylinder error.
    4. Linux will hit 8 to 10% of the desktop market.
    5. Ximian will lead the way in Gnome development.
    6. Delphi Kylix will be the Linux development package of the decade.
    7. SuSE will finally learn we don't want to run from the CD.
    8. Sun will rock the world with StarOffice 6.0
    9. OS X will change how we look at commercial OSes.
    10. Linux will become a real alternative to Windows XP with better

    these are my hubble reactions

    7. SuSE will finally learn we don't want to run from the CD.

a misworded prophecy: maybe SuSE will learn that the idea of a proprietary linux distribution is ok for the likes of Caldera who sell to Corp.'s but desktop users dont want it.

    8. Sun will rock the world with StarOffice 6.0

yet to be seen - they are concidering selling it - personally i place my bets on openoffice and hope sun lets us all use Staroffice - it does contain a lot of propriatary code.

"Ximian will lead the way in Gnome development. "

oh yeah - that's a bit of a no-brainer - if you go to the http://www.gnome.org/start/ you will see that gnome.org just tells you to head over and get it from ximian - which is a great thing - i dont know if there was ever 2 gnome branches but now there is only one - and it is heading for Gnome 2 - with nautilus as the main file manager

    GO GNOME

I don't know, their "Firewall on CD" thing seems to be kinda popular.
I've fonfigured it for 3 random companies in the past 3 months.
In some ways its quite good to have a firewall on
a read only medium, but that leads to other issues.
I do have my pet issues with the product :)
Although its fairly polished and most companies don't have a problem with its £1000 (ish) price tag.

    <edit> stuff and things... </edit>

can't say that i've ever encountered the Firewall version of SuSE - i assume that it makes some images on the hard drive like the live evaluation
is it not a security risk not to be able to update your software without getting a whole new cd?

i set up a mandrake firewall with their bastille linux software and it's working great.

    which suse product is £1000?

i think that suse would do much better if they made like a real distro and released their admin tools as gpl - mandrake are gonna kick their asses until they do.

Gaahhh. Mandrake, Redhat, Corel, SuSe, all mentioned in one small piece of text. *shudder*

Linux will take 8-10% of the desktop market? This year? Ya wha? No way, never happen.

i wouldnt rule it out - it is really the only option for a lot of governments - as for end users - they tend to take whatever comes with the pc

with lindows and redmond linux and xp showing one entertaining security failure after another , and gnome 2 - i am optomistic for linux on the desktop

Nope, it only uses the hard disk for log files (if you tell it to) and for swap.
You install another machine with the "Admin Workstation" CD which has a configuration
too "TOS" (I think) which you use to create a config floppy, which you physically write protect.
Then the firewall boots off the CD and reads the configs off the floppy.
(I think it copys them into a ramdisk, AFAIR)

is it not a security risk not to be able to update your software without getting a whole new cd?

Yeah, thats one of my main issues with it, especially considering it uses BIND (if you turn it on)
    as a cashing/forwarding nameserver.
Another big issue is that to make changes to the config you have rebuild the floppy and reboot
the firewall with the new config.

But its all down to pros and cons, at least with a read only system you are assured that
a hacker can't trojan any system binary, once you bounce it, its back to a clean state.
Admittably vulnerable until you get a new CD of turn off what ever service they broke in on.

i set up a mandrake firewall with their bastille linux software and it's working great.

I would much prefear a machine I built up myself,
    although I would favour O-BSD/IPF(pf?) to linux/ipchains,
    but hey, different strokes :)

    which suse product is £1000?

Well the Firewall on cd is STG£ 856.58 incl. VAT
    I made a random-ish conversion to a rough IR£1000.
    Close enough.

Well they do have a standard (real??) distro, these things are just "Buisness Solutions"
they really are quite easy to buy off the shelf (net?) and install.

I was rather impressed with their mailserver solution.
Postfix/OpenLDAP/Cyrus(IMAP/POP) all tied in with a (somewhat kludgy, but efficient) web interface.
