I've recently re-installed AvP. I couldn't play it before (I loaded a level, and then it'd crash) because I had no 3d card. I recently put in a 16 Meg Voodoo3 card, and so I tried to install it. When I run AvP, it comes to to the select profile name screen. I put in a name, and select 'continue', then it crashes. Anyways, when it crashes, it leaves the file 'dx_error.log' in the directory (Currently: F:\avp), and it reads:

    Line 215 of avp\win95\win_proj.cpp:
    WM_ACTIVATEAPP msg: bActive = 1

    Line 220 of avp\win95\win_proj.cpp:
    ?&@#! no lpDDSPrimary surface

    Line 221 of avp\win95\win_proj.cpp:
    ?&@#! no lpDDSBack surface

    Line 222 of avp\win95\win_proj.cpp:
    ?&@#! no lpZBuffer surface

    Line 224 of avp\win95\win_proj.cpp:
    ?&@#! no lpDDBackdrop surface

    Line 140 of avp\win95\ffstdio.cpp:
    Loaded FastFile: fastfile\Tex30.FFL
    (for directory: graphics\Menus)

    Line 140 of avp\win95\ffstdio.cpp:
    Loaded FastFile: fastfile\Tex1.FFL
    (for directory: Graphics\Common)

    Any ideas? Reply.

    Thanks.

If I remember corectly, the same thing happened to me on my old PC.
Game would crash when I loaded a level.
I put it down to my machine being a immense piece of crap.

    On the subject of AvP...

whnenI play it now on my new PC, when ever I interupt the intro, the sound stops and gets stuck in a loop.
It never changes even during the game.....

    very annoying.

    Any ideas?

Beside the usual, Direct X8, graphic card drivers etc.
    Try this :
Open the directory, Fastfile in the AvP Dir, then open ffinfo (remember to make a backup) and delete the line "graphics\FMVs;Tex26.FFL"

Also try setting your desktop resolution to 800x600 or even 640x480.

To stop the music repeating push the ~ key and then type in CDSTOP in all caps.

AvP has serious compatibility issues with win2000 and XP and with certain yamaha sound cards with 3d sound, try disabling all 3d sound...it also doesnt like DirectSound....

    ..
Have you patched it when you reinstallled it?
