    right..
i came into posession of a few old comps.. there are two basic types

wang computers... isa gfx card, no sound, 40megHD... (i can add another one probably to make it 80)
not sure about the speed but i think 16mhz.. if not that, then not much more. runrs win3.1 anyway. not sure about the ram.. prob a meg or two *can prob be doubled, 3 or 4*

and a few mitac computers ... isa gfx, no sound, 212meg hd (room for one more), 2 megs of ram * can be upped to 4.. probably* and... it's a 486 (not sure of the speed)

no cd drom drive on either, and a floppy on the wang, but none on the mitac (finding a floppy for the mitac ain't going to be hard).

basically what i want to know is.... linux or bsd? and then, what distro? and even then.. how old a distro? as i doubt a new one would work very well, and i haven't the experience to go remodelling the kernel :).
basically all i want to do is place a comp in each room of my house ( :p ), networked with my main comp which is online downstairs, and just be able to ssh and/or irc out.
    so.. ideas?

    Got wang?

    hehe

You could try ucLinux it should work a treat on the systems you have.
    linux vs. uClinux?
Since uClinux was created to support non-MMU microprocessors, multitasking can be tricky. Most user applications that run on top of uClinux, however, will not require multitasking. In addition, most of the binaries and source code for the kernel have been rewritten to tighten-up and slim-down the code base. This all means that the uClinux kernel is much, much smaller than the original Linux 2.0 kernel, while retaining the main advantages of the linux operating system: stability, superior network capability, and excellent file system support.

    Common Linux API
    uCkernel < 512 kb
    uCkernel + tools < 900 kb

Is uClinux a networked OS environment?
uClinux comes equipped with a full TCP/IP stack, as well as support for numerous other networking protocols. Pretty much all the networking protocols are implemented. uClinux is an internet-ready OS perfect for embedded systems.

Which file systems does uClinux support?
NFS, ext2, MS-DOS, and FAT16/32 are only a handful of the available file systems embraced by uClinux.
