Here's a weird one, since upgrading to WIN98SE some icons have
without apparant cause been changing, eg a notepad file
is indicated by say a Windows Help File icon but the file will open
    correctly.

Very odd, anyone else had this happen to 'em.

    Miké.

sounds to me like your windows is set for a nervous breakdown. I expect you'll see a Blue Screen Of DeathTM quite soon. No, I dunno, but any Win system I've had has done some weird stuff days before a full crash, so........ :)

I've seen this all the time. It's not an indication of a crash, merely a really shíte operating system.

    No, seriously.

Go to Microsoft.com and search for PowerToys.

When you get it, install it. Go to Control Panel and you'll see "Tweak UI". Open it and in there on one of the tabs you'll find a button to 'rebuild icon cache'. Click this, reboot, and hopefully problem solved.

Scan your computer for viruses with an up-todate virus scanner.

Have you got Norton tools? That did something similar for me I think.

I downloaded Tweak UI but have'nt needed to use it yet so we'll
    see how that goes.

Gordon did you mean that Norton makes
the icons go mad or that I should use Norton to fix the prob,
as it happens I dont have "...Tools". Sometimes I think these
diagnosis progs do more harm than good as they encourage
    tweaking by amatures.:D

    Mike.

No, I meant that ever since I have installed Norton tools I have experienced a similar phenomenon with changing icons, I was just wondering if Norton was part of the reason.
