I have just installed linux, using typedefs excellent notes (thank you very much). But now I cant get on to the internet, which is ****. I have set up the network settings with all the right settings im pretty sure, but I still can't access the internet, the only thing I can think of is the drivers for the network card, anyone know of any ideas on where to go, or had any problems like it.

    Heya,

congrats on the linux install ;)

Internet connectivity is usually one of the trickiest parts of an install for people new to *nix.

We just need a little bit of info and then I'ms ure we'll have you sorted.

You seem to be connecting up through a network card??

Do you intend on using a modem aswell or instead?

What distrobution of Linux is it?

    .logic.

Sorry I should have included the linux version. But its mandrake 8.1, and I will only be using the network card, no modem. I cant think of anything more to tell you, so I hope thats enough for a start.

did you get a cd or something?
    boot windoz
    right click on network neighbourhood
    properties
right click on tcpip where bound to ethernet card

find your ipaddress, subnet mask and your default gateway?
if this information is not there then,
    type
    ipconfig at the dos prompt and get the information yes? ;

reboot, your system. same procedure as above, now , is the ipaddress different? if so then it is probably being assigned by a dhcp server ok? get the subnet mask, the default gateway,
see your ipaddress 150.100.100.192 or whatever then dhcp is 150.100.100.1 or something like this though maybe not (if in doubt ask your network admin?), the default gateway is probably the address of the server though might be different, you will probably be fscked without the default gateway filled in in drakeconf and or the address of your dns.?

If the addresses are static then just supply the same ones to drakeconf else get the address of a dhcp server and the gateway and stuff ok?

Yeah I got the CD on a german magazine so I'm able to rock away happily on linux now, sorry about being an asshole earlier, but I hate to think someone is being patronising.

Anyways here is the results of and ipconfig

    Windows IP-Konfiguration

    0 Ethernet Adapter :

    IP-Adresse. . . . . . . . . : 134.176.202.122
    Subnetmask . . . . . . . . : 255.255.254.0
    Standard-Gateway . . . . . . : 134.176.202.1

and I have all these things set up the way you see them there, in fact the subnetmask was wrong and i fixed that but still no joy but still no joy, but what i can do is telnet to the standard gateway and log on as normal, but I can't access the outside world, but what I did forget to check was different protocols to see if everything is fu><ored, so i think ill try now and see if it is just http, in which case it is probably the browsers. brb.

I got in woohoo, linux rules.

Well anyway I think it was because I set everything up manually whereas if you just let it take care of itself then it works like a charm (something or other about dhcp, whatever that is).

In fact as my first job as a smarty linux man I'm going to find out about it.

    Ta for the help lads.
