Sales in Japan may have been slow but the GC even grossed more this weekend than harrypotter.

    Gamecube outsold Xbox 2:1.

Nice one Nintendo and without any strong launch titles..amazing.

    GameCube topples the young wizard

    Rogue Squadron II.
    Wave-Race.
    Luigi's mansion.
    Dave Mirra 2.
    Tony Hawks 3.

    And to a lesser extent

    Batman Vengeance
    Madden
    NHL Hitz
    Tarzan untamed
    Crazy Taxi.

I know 3 of the top 5 titles in my list are "must have". All that excites me about the XBox is Halo really. And THPS3.

Good news all round about the 2:1 tho.

    Peace.

Both consoles are selling faster than they can be put on shelves, which is great to see. Nintendo are being pretty ambitious with their sales predictions but at this rate, they'll probably surpass them. Mind you, the gap would most likely be a lot narrower if the X-Box had the same number of units on sale as the GC.

I find it hilarious that someone could compare the sales of cinema seats (most of which were half-price kids seats) to the sales of a gamecube including games and accessories.

Hell - if youre gonna include those extras, why not include "sweetie sales" from the cinemas, or better yet, all Harry Potter merchandising.

I'm delighted to see gamecube do well - it looks like an excellent system, but the HP comparison is laughable.

I disagree bonkey. There's no other frame of reference here, and the two are competing media... All that these figures show is that the GameCube made more money at US retail than Harry Potter did at US box office. Thats a pretty impressive feat, and it does demonstrate quite well the strength of the games industry and Ninty's product.

After all, the real competition for a company like Nintendo or Microsoft isn't Sony or the third-parties or the other platform holders; it's the other forms of media. It's not a question of whether a person buys Wave Race or Project Gotham racing, it's a question of whether they buy a game or a DVD, or whether they rent a game or go to the cinema...

I also think its doubius to compare the sales figures, I know the game cube is not that expensive, but I wager its more than the price of the average cinema ticket :)

A better comparison would be the total spent on games against the total spent on cinema sales perhaps.

What it does highlight though is the great amount of money being spent on the consol market - no wonder Sony and Microsoft have enterd in to it. Wonder who will be next ?

I do also feel the real comparison is against the market leader of that time.

Yeah, this christmas I'm either going to get a GBA or a washing machine. I can't quite decide which. I do know that I fúcking hate the launderette, but then there's SB2 on the GBA.

    Decisions, decisions.

Good point shinji, the biggest mistake Railway companies of old made was to consider themselves a part of the "Railroad Industry", when they were in fact a part of the Transport Industry. The same is true for the "Games Industry" - its a part of the entertainment industry. If it wants to grow and survive it needs to take on all over forms of entertainment - so an online web based game is up against porn websites - single player games like metal gear solid 2 are sorely pushed by a more community based activities like watching a funny dvd etc etc.

Panasonic have sort of entered the market. They are producing their own line of gamecube that will be able to play normal sized dvd's. That must be one hell of a deal for both ninty and panasonic.

I'll tell ya one thing, I'd really love to get my hands on one of those. I saw a pic of it and it's all shiney chrome finished - like a frickin' mirror it was so reflective!

Game Cube + DVD Player all in one? Ninty + Panasonic joining forces? Small boys in the park, jumpers for goalposts? Can't go wrong! Won't go wrong!

I heard on Thumb bandits last night that there might be something released to allow dreamcast games to be played on one the X-Box. I'd say there are a few people here who are slightly more knowledgable than Iain Lee so has anyone heard anything about this? If I was going to buy one of the next gen consoles, and one of them could play Dreamcast games, I'd buy that.....

That might have something to do with the fact that Nintendo released double the gamecubes as microsoft released xboxes. I'm not sure it necessarily speaks to the demand for the respective consoles.

I think it was 300K to 700K but if ninty managed to sell 600K+ then i think that tells you the demand was there, and every xbox site i go to now is all propaganda..
