    The Game:
    http://www.theunderdogs.org/game.php?id=1593
    The Manual:
    http://www.theunderdogs.org/games/p/pacgen/files/pacgen-m.zip

Repost if you want in (I'd like to start this quite soon) plus state the number of turns (roughly) you think you could play per day, so we can match up players for the first series of games.

Depending on the numbers we might split into 2 groups, 1 with 1 turn per day, the other with 2+ turns a day.

I've thought alot about rules, either campaigns or leagues, or a ladder based system, and then i decided, shag it, lets just play a few games :)

We can keep track of the results of the games if yous want, to see whos doing the best, but other than that, you can post games that are setup as a new topic :

    PGPBM : <player> v <player> on <scenario>

and give us a running commentary :)

If you want to leave it as even as possible, you can agree to play the scenario twice, switching sides after 1st game, as some of the scenarios are quite one sided, and only a very skilled player could hope to stave off defeat.

    Downloading it now.

Never played these types of games before but I'm willing to learn.
How long would a turn take approx??

Better put me down for 1 tpd as I work 9-5.

1 turn every 2 days or so ? If so, then stick me down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,644 ✭✭✭✭nesf

    Definitely put me down.

Problem is, with my lecture timetable and clubs/socs commitments it'll vary from anything from 0-4 turns a day!

Sundays are completely out, I've mountainering from 8 am to 9-10 pm!

I'll download it as soon as I can, I need to get a new account on a different college network first tho, as this account doesn't leave me download much, I'll try it anyways, but I get another account in a week or so :)

    Central China

1937 - August 13th - The Japanese Army attempts to pacify Central China in a series of offensive actions. The poorly equipped Chinese attempt to stymie the Japanese.

This is an 18 turn game with a small number of units per side, so its a good one to start with, you'd expect the Axis to win ... but 18 turns isn't exactly much time to capture those Chinese citys.

Now I need everyones email addy that wants to take part, i'll match off the players....can each of you say if you prefer to play as the Axis or Allies for the entire tourney, or if you don't mind.

    Use nesferatu10@hotmail.com,

Allies pls, just love being the underdog :)

    battlingcheese@yahoo.com
I'll play as whoever. (Never played before)

    2 Questions:

How do you actually install the game from The Underdogs website? For the life of me I can't figure it out.

Are we going to need to get the 1.1 patch or just what's on the above website.

    Thxs

Yeah what cheese said...downloaded the file and no readme or obviously named setup. Found Unrar but not exactly sand friendly. Game seems interesting but would probably be a lot more fun when installed.
    Cheers in advance.

Yay for actually getting off my arse and looking myself:)

    Found installation instructions- specifially
    PACIFIC GENERAL

INSTALLING THE PACGEN GAME FROM THE UNDERDOGS' SITE
    1) Unzip all the files into the same directory (all 19 "PacgenXX.zip" files into a single directory). This will be the
    game directory.
    2) Go to that directory in the DOS prompt (MUST be MS-DOS, the "Run..." command does not work) and type:
    unrar x pacgen.001
    3) run setup.exe from the directory you extracted pacgen to
    4) Play the game using "Pacgen.exe"

The version of PacGen that is obtainable through the Underdogs' site does not come with any video or cut scenes
found in the retail version of the game. Therefore, when starting the game, ensure you add the tag-line of "novid"
to the start command... for example:
    "C:\GAMES\PACGEN.EXE NOVID"
Also, ensure you have chosen the appropriate language when starting the game (ie: English). The version on the
Underdog's site is the English version, and your Windows national preferances must match, otherwise the program
will crash. Go to your Windows control panel and change the language under "Regional Settings".
It is HIGHLY recomended you install the Armory Equipment Roster before attempting to play the game.

Can check out http://www.theunderdogs.org/redirect.php?id=1593&url=http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/sgt_stryker/pachome.htm for more details, including this armoury update.

Just for the info of anyone who was as initially confused as I was (cheese anyway:) ).

ok, i'll be mailin u tomorrow on your opponenrs details, so start it up, but just remember:

    1. make sure u have upgraded to Pacific General to v1.1 (http://www.peachmountain.com/5star/
    2. don't install any custom files as all players need exact same versions

BTW cheese just in case you ran into same problem i had- You have to unzip all 19 zip files into the same folder (Say GENGAMES for example), then move the pacgen.xxx file from each unzipped folder into GENGAMES folder, along with the unrar program which is in the first unzipped file - then do the unrar x pacgen.001 command in dos and it should run good.

Just so its clear (wasnt made clear for by instructions )
You should have the 19 unzipped files, the 19 pacgens.xxx files from each unzipped file and the unrar program in the same folder. Otherwise youll get an error message telling you it cant find pacgen.002 or whatever the next one is.

What's the deal with this "unrar x pacgen.001" malarkey?

I'm not proficient in MS-DOS at all :)

I've unzipped all 19 .zip files into my C:\Games\PacificGeneral folder and now I'm in the MS-DOS prompt at c:\games\pacificgeneral. When I type "unrar x pacgen.001" - nothing happens. Can you guys help me out please :)

    Cheers,

You need to go into *each* of the unzipped files and look for the pacgen.001, pacgen.002, and so on. Move each of these files out of their unzipped folder to the next folder "up" (You say in your C:\Games|PacificGeneral folder). you need to move the unrar program from the first unzipped folder as well. Then when you run unrar in dos it will be able to find the files it needs (They all have to be in the same folder).

download winrar, point it at pacgen.001 and click extract ...... it'll do all the files then in one go, much handier :)
