Which newspapers (if any) do people read? Which would you recommend for an informed and relatively unbiased opinion? Which would you advise steering clear of and why?

My current favourites/news folder has the following online papers (who pays for newspapers these days anyway)

    - The Irish Times (http//:www.ireland.com): The only Irish newspaper worth reading, editorial quality has disimproved recently but it appears to be improving again over the last month or so.

    - The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com) : Needs free registration. Good relatively unbiased news from around the world, not great for analysis.

    - The Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com): excellent op-eds and science sections.

    - The Guardian (http://www.guardianunlimited.co.uk) : Top quality newspaper with liberal biase, excellent guest writers and a great sport section.

Two good weekly news magazines are:
    - The Economist (http://www.economist.com) : Pay site, great global political and business coverage. Very pro free markets, socially liberal.

The American Prospect (http://www.prospect.org) : Set up by writers who felt that previously liberal mags like THE New Republic and Nation had moved too far to the left. Attempts to be a standard bearer for the left wing of the US democratic party.

Slate (http://slate.msn.com ) is always worth a read.

And for diversion you can't beat the Onion http://www.theonion.com )

LOL, the Irish Times and the Guardian are most definitely not unbiased newpapers.

I used to read the Irish times when at home. Now in England I don't read to many papers, but I read the Irish times online when I get a chance.

Which is why I used the phrase "with liberal biase".

You should probably learn to read before you comment on newspapers.

i do :( well, i prefer to sit on the bus doing something productive instead of falling asleep and looking through the window.

i used to get The Irish Times almost every morning but since i'm not that really interested in irish local news that much, i have been getting The Guardian lately. much better world coverage and some top notch writing. also, its 50p cheaper then the times :)

Well I agree re: guardian as it might as well rename itself
"The Labour Party Progandist" (not too much of a mouthful)

The Times is the best of the Irish and I wouldn't wipe me árse w/ any of that Independant Newspapers tripe. My old man gets all the papers in work, thats the only reason they even get in the house....because they're free!!

I like the washington post website as well. I lived in Washington DC for 3 years so that used to be the daily anyway- but their sports coverage is very good as well:)

The Evening Standard in the evening and Metro in the mornings when I'm bored and don't have a book to read on the train :)

The ES is pretty good, because its biases are obvious - its main one being that it doesn't trust the Labour government. It's not pro-Conservative either mind; it's a staunchly London paper and is of the opinion that the Labour party has fúcked London over. It's not far wrong, either...

I tend to flick through all the papers during the day at some point, actually bothering to read the Independent and occasionally one of the gutter tabloids, since they're a worryingly good barometer of public opinion.

In terms of up to date news though, news.bbc.co.uk is the ONLY place worth looking...

    http://www.thepaperboy.com/

I find absolutly no paper gives a non-biased report. The only way to get the whole story is to ask both or more sides about the same incident.

    Another site...

    http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/

The site itself it a bit erm... Mulder'ish but it does occasionally point to news stories to help you find other news that most won't print.
