Anyone looking to get Civ 3?

I loved Civ 2, and I will get Civ3 and try it out. Pity there does not appear to be a playable demo, but the screen shots look good, and the whole diplomacy angle has been beefed up, so that there is more than 1 way to win the game (other than nukes).

There is nothing like rolling over a group of stone age clubmen in your tank.

It's not out here until November 17th, compared to October 30th in US, so I ordered mine on amazon.com today, they'll ship it internationally so should get it 2nd or 3rd of November :)

There's a preview in Pc Format and an interview with Mieir on the DVD. Looks..mm similar to 2 but apparently the interface is a lot cleaner and better than CTP.

Having obtained an 'evaluation' copy I can tell you that it kicks a$$. Great AI, loads of gameplay balance so you can't just run over the comp every game by building all the Wonders etc., you'll be lucky to get more than three of the ancient Wonders from what I've seen so far.

Check Apolyton forums for numerous graphics and AI or game rules updates that the 3l33t Civ ha><ors have up already. :)

Is it still so fast that by the time you have a decent sized Medieval army it's already obsolete?

I hate that. Love Civ1 and 2 though so hurrah!

No. You will be using your Swordsmen or Knights until the 1500's - the days of having tanks in 1700 are well gone.

Thats good, in Civ2 I usually get my railroads up and running in the Middle Ages :)

Although one thing I've always hated about Civ2 is the cutoff of the game just when its getting exciting with all the tanks and artillery and such... :(

as a true civilisation fan i just thought I should put an ickle post up here.

civ2 was for me the best RTS game ever! ...much better than AOE.

I only found out there was a civ3 while readin this so i am rightly pleased now.

    when is its official release?

umm RTS = real time strategy.
Civilisation = Turn based strategy :D

That aside, as a fan of every version of civ since my amiga 'Insert disk 4 ' days.

My evaluation copy is getting good use, but this is one Ill be buying, very slick indeed. The culture Idea is great, makes diplomacy more important.

The germans are currently feeling my longbow powah!! Take it spearman!!

Where did you get the evaluation copy?

dunno about snaga but i got an evaluation version to review for irishplayer.com tm ;)

best strategy game ever, no doubt about it, good old civ dynamics with funky new shiny shell.

my cavallry have stormed over North America, crushing the, um, English as it happens in 1782AD... and then i finished off the russians who had fled to newfoundland around 300AD with the fall of grozny in northern Venezuela...Just completed the great American railroad, Maine to Washington south to argentina...have landed expeditionary force under Napolean in South Africa primed to hit north to seize the oilfields of the middle east...The phucking germans have honoured their alliance with the babylonians following my attack on a city they had in Florida...

    God i love civ...

Is there any way to make it give you a world map based on the real world in this one? I couldn't find any.

You can play on an Earth map by going into 'Load Scenario' from the main menu and selecting from the list there. However, the smaller Earth map is absolutely pathetic, and the large one also sucks, to say the least. (Ireland is 2 squares of forest due North of England!?!?).

If you want a decent Earth map, Mills, go to www.civfanatics.com and get their improved map from the Customisation Forum, it's a vast improvement, to put it mildly.

Ok I got an 'eval' copy while waiting for my copy to arrive from the States and yes it still has the old Civ magic. But the more I think about it the more I feel a bit let down. The major thing is the lack of the much vaunted multiplayer... this game would be amazing online or over a lan. Yes there are some great new features but overall there's not a lot new. While saying all this I have been playing it for the last 3 days so it can't be that bad :)

The thing that may settle it for me one way or the other is whether they release the multiplayer as a free downloadable patch or as the 'gold' version for another $40-$50. My betting is on the 'gold' version but I'm hoping to be proved wrong.
