Anyone read Codex Tau yet? I'm really impressed.

I bought a box of Fire-Warriors and the models are quite nice (but found them a little fluck-abouty to stick the arms together properly).

Weaponry is excellent - standard Pulse Rifle is R: 30" S:5 AP:5 but a Tau Fire Warrior is no better than an Imperial Guard stats wise (BS:3, Ld:7).

They will never win in hand-to-hand - WS: 2 and I: 2 (due to some pecularity in their vision).

XV Crisis Battlesuits - think Terminators with Jump Packs and (with an upgrade) the ability to fire 2 weapons).

    XV Broadside suits - twin-linked Railguns (Range: 72" S:10 AP:1) and either twin-linked Missle Pods (S:5 AP:5 I think - no line of site needed) or twin-linked Plasma Rifles (S:7 AP:4 doesn't over-heat).

The great thing is, because they've got crappy aim, you can get your Path-Finders (Fast-Attack) to "paint" a target and have the big boys let rip!

They've got the Kroot for close combat help - they're pretty good - Kroot Carnivores are the troops with Kroot Hounds as Fast-Attack and Krootox as Heavy-Support. No matter how many Kroot units you buy, they must all be banded together in one big unit which makes for an interesting "mob" approach. Kroot aren't affected by difficult terrain in woods/forests because they're not much more than animals anyway.

    Well worth a look!

(off to buy a Devilfish transport and some Path-Findrs later)

Hmmm sounds interesting, I must pop down and pick up the codex.

Is it just me, or does anyone else just love getting a new codex and trying to plan out armies, even if you never played with them before?

heeheehee - it's true, innit? Well, I've got 12 Fire Warriors, a Devilfish Transport and 16 Kroot to start my army - just a small one - no bigger than 1500 pts - just for kicks.

I've had the codex for two weeks and I've barely had a chance to flick throught it. I love the look of the battle suits though...

Maximum of 20 Carnivores per squad.

Also, I'm not sure that Kroot can out-number Tau in the army (because they don't fully trust them I think as they're mercenaries and newbies to their empire).

Also, you can't have more Krootox or Kroot Hounds than Carnivores (and the scenario might limit your Fast Attack and Heavy Support choices anyway).
